Cowon still competes on Archos AV500 territory from 2005, while Archos now covers markets that were previously partly covered by smartphones and PDAs and creates whole new market segments with each new generation that is released.
This is either ignorance or tongue-in-cheek provocation, I'm sure ...

Re: SOLD! Get Your Act Together Archos...
Stability!!! I figured Archos was past this as I had no stability issues in the first few months. I don't know if it was the firmware releases or what not but the more I used it (as time went by) the more unstable the player became. Lock-ups, re-boots, etc.. Why customers have never gotten firmware ...

Re: Archos 5 or Cowon Q5W
i beg to differ. Cowon has its own set of problems as well
It does, but you can often sort them out a lot easier than you can Archos problems. When you reinstal or upgrade firmware on the Cowon, it completely renews everything. I believe a lot of system files are retained after reinstalling ...

I own a Q5 and an Archos 605 and 704 (but not a 5). Just a few thoughts in no particular order...
In the Q5s favour is sound quality, considerably better than any Archos I've heard and with a lot of equaliser options, reasonable built in speakers (not much worse than most laptops), a very nice ...

Re: Consumer common sense?
Just look at all the warning signs/labels and just think most of these are created because someone somewhere actually did this. Also just go on a drive for ten minutes in the city and see how many don't know how to drive. Let alone walk. Watch the news that is the whole point. Stupid humans ...

Come on, DLLNBrown, credit us with a bit of sense (I'm sure i speak for the OP too). It doesn't matter whether automatic time update is on or off.
I don't use the recording function, so none of those features are active on my machine anyway.
Of course it's a bug. An annoying one; the battery goes ...

hk_andyc: you're not imagining it, mine switches on from shutdown too. I only know because when I come to use it it comes on in about 5 seconds, when I know for sure I shut it down previously! Makes a nonsense of the Shutdown mode, if you ask me.

Re: Adding external hard drive to the Usb port on the 704WiFi
It is an amazing machine. I think Archos tried to be too clever with the next (05) series, as although they are even more functional the stability has "gone down the pan" http://forum.archosfans.com/images/smilies/badgrin.gif

Is this a survey? Have Archos asked you to find out where they went wrong on the 5/7 and the 605/705? http://forum.archosfans.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

1. you can connect a hard drive to the host port, but you'll probably need an external power supply. It must be fat32 formatted as well
2. the OS is Linux based, but it doesn't really matter, 'cos you'll never be able to modify it or instal other progs
3. No.

Have you tried to fully shutdown the 605 (15+ second press of power button) and restart? It can clear bugs sometimes.

Pete,
Yours is misbehaving then. It should not restart unless you have reconnected it to a power source.
It always starts up after being connected to power so that it can monitor the charging process.

Re: Some mystery reasons why Archos does what they do!
At last I get it. I've twigged. The famous Archos 605 shutdown bug is there for a reason. Archos arranged for it that every third time we suspend, we actually have to shutdown, as this clears out all the other bugs (which are more annoying than the deliberate suspend bug).
And there's me thinking ...

Re: 605 wifi does not hold charge
cosmicnut: I find shutdown rather than suspend doesn't make a lot of difference. I've lost count of the times I've forced shutdown (because it froze when suspending) only to come back to it next day and find the unit in suspend mode (ie: it starts up quickly again). Something is definitely waking it ...

Re: Viewing Recorded 605 Video on PC
I record movies using my 605 but ocassionally would prefer to view some of the movies on my PC rather than on the 605. Problem is that when I try to view the .avi file using Windows Media Player 9.0, it briefly displays 'error downloading codec' and only plays back the audio. Any solution to this ...

But the Archos screen is 800x480 (not 400), so it shouldn't have to resize a 800x480 video.
