The 604 is as un-open source as you can get. Several forum members tried to go through the GPL release a while ago, but found that Archos had removed vital data needed to crack it. The Nokia n800 would be a better purchase.

Yeah it appears Archos programmed the key physically into the Archos's keyboard but forgot to go into Opera and set the virtual button to actually do stuff. AAARRRGH!

I also just discovered that the phsical tab button has another use besides changing tabs; it also acts as a shift key.

I know that with the 604wifi, I can use the keyboard in pretty much any text field.

Hey, I was wondering if there was a significant increase in overall speed of the unit. I know it starts up faster, but is the OS still laggy like on the 604 wifi? Also, do websites render any faster?

The 405 (the smallest model) does not have wifi or a touchscreen. btw, the .opera web browser does support downloads, and all archos models have divx support.

All files will remain in the device- you do not have to reload it. Just put the firmware file in the root of the device, go to the system menu, and select upware firmware, and you're set.

If you failed to reach a remote server, that means that there is no wifi, so your device has not succeeded in connecting to your wifi. There are a couple of sticky topics on the 604wifi forum that might help you configure your device to connect to the internet. Good luck!

Maybe the chip in the Archos couldn't handle running the browser and the audio player at the same time, and this weakness also caused the browser to be limited. If that's the case, I hope they put in a better processor, because the 604 has a lot of problems with OS slowdown.

The only thing that would make me upgrade and give up my expensive Sams warranty was if they had included a faster processor and a truly better screen. Who wants all of these bells and whistles if the hardware can't keep up? If I use flash video, I want smooth framerates, not like on the Nokia N800 ...

I'm sticking w/ the 604 wifi, because I love the interface. I don't use the wifi functions much, and just wanted a touchscreen PMP with recording capabilities. If you want a computer the Raon is probably a better choice (also look at the Samsung-they just released an awesome-looking model).

you cant set a regular download time, but you can manually download files by clicking on mp3 links. pretty much any link to a file will work, with the exception of email attachments

I doubt it. Supposedly the successor to the 604wifi is being announced this month. If that is the case, we may have one final firmware update, or Archos might not release one at all.

a lot of games would be hard to play w/ the cramped buttons. I could see tetris though.

One of the main turnoffs for me is the external wifi USB. That thing looks UGLY. I also heard that the HSDPA connectivity as well as the full version of Windows CE are not included in the base price. Is that true?
