portable WEP cracker ?
I've been trolling this forum for a couple of days now looking for possible cracks and or hacks for the firmware...sigh
but i have half the mind to try to make my archos 604 wifi a WEP encryption cracker
i've searched that issue to.
it seems, though that most if not all wep packet collecters are on instal/exe form only.
if anyone has ideas or already knows how i might be able to use my archos for it please tell.... my mind and ears are open

Uhh, unfortunately not
The 604 is as un-open source as you can get. Several forum members tried to go through the GPL release a while ago, but found that Archos had removed vital data needed to crack it. The Nokia n800 would be a better purchase.

I have a serious question on this. Why would you want to 'crack' someones WEP??? By stating this in an open forum you have implicated that you wish to conduct or be complicate in an illegal act.
I don't for the life of me know why people like this spend soooo much time messing with others personal data or trying to take something that is not theirs to begin with. If you would spend 1/8 of the time and productivity on something useful we (all users) would be in a better shape.
Now if this seems I am poking you in the eye I may or may not be if you condone the illegal use and practices mentioned above then yes I speak directly to you. If not then no blood no foul.
Come on folks by saying stuff like this in the open you just paint a bulls-eye on you (and this forum) for tracking and id by Big Brother. Be smart if you own it F with it, if it isn't yours and you didn't pay for it the for GOD'S sake leave it the F alone.....

Nope... First off, few, if any, Linux distros will switch to a GPL 3... Second, the GPL 3 does not retroactively pull in all old releases...Frances wrote:... Maybe GPLv.3 will force a change.
So the GPL 3 would mean nothing to the Archos, and the company that engineers the software, Monta Vista Linux,... will likely retain development under the GPL 2 license...

actually ur taking the apple that has fallen FAR from the tree. i mainly use kismet and airodump to crack my own wep key @ home and to help secure my schools net. on that thought, if my archos can collect packets in its free time that would be rather useful so when it does get hacked i know to change my key.
Bring the NOISE
You are better off with Nokia N800 or PepperPad 3 for that. The PepperPad 3 runs an X86 compatible processor and can be upgraded with fairly standard laptop RAM, and can be hacked (voids warranty) to run a full Fedora Core 4 installation... It's the computer that I use most often. I'm even writitng this with it...amdathlon3200plus64 wrote:actually ur taking the apple that has fallen FAR from the tree. i mainly use kismet and airodump to crack my own wep key @ home and to help secure my schools net. on that thought, if my archos can collect packets in its free time that would be rather useful so when it does get hacked i know to change my key.

I whole heartedly agree with this. Those who are trying to get something for nothing or mess with others property/data are the types that give the true power over to those who wish to oppress us. IE: Micro $oft. All you are doing is openly giving ammunition to them so they can then use it against you.
"Oh no! there are Hackers every where! Please Big Brother! Help us fight these degenerates! And see why open source is so bad!" I can see it now a land of people paying big money to get F'd up the A@#% by a company that only wants two things. MORE OF THE POWER AND MORE OF THE MONEY! You think gas is expensive now? wait until theres a Window$ sign at the local ga$$ station.
Just remember it starts with small things like, ignorance, to give 'them' the power to take yours away.

0_o zomg WHAT the hell are you talking about ShuaM75?
The only real reason for wanting to enable the Archos devices to be a WEP cracker would be to use some one else's wireless for 5-10 mins. Big bloody deal.
I leave a VLAN on my linksys open to passers-by all the time. Just limit the amount of time they can be logged on for (30mins), the bandwidth available to them and put a website filter in place. No skin off my back if some one wants to check email or read a forum for a few mins.
