ARCHOS 5 SERIES (605 WIFI) OFFICIAL RELEASE!
Hey guys great news,
I just stumbled on a page-under-construction on Archos' site for the 5th generation players. Here is the link for tech specs of 605 WiFi and you can just navigate around from there. Pictures are still not up yet
< edit by admin : let's remove all links to prod.archos.com from this forum I got some angry emails from Archos >
one big note: it says adobe flash is included but with optional internet plugin. sounds like they're gonna make you pay extra to use the internet option there.
it looks like it's a little smaller and a little lighter. it will also have a SSD flash memory version WITH SD card slot expansion!

Nice work finding this. Looks like 160GB versions of at least some of the model variants are still coming. Automatic downloading of latest firmware also!
I've been following the arguements over this leaked news since it appeared this afternoon on the French Archos forum sites ..quite a read!!!!
...I wonder if the Flash Player plug-in will be backward compatible with our 604wifi's????????

I'm sure quite a few of you have found this but one of the pages under construction has this snippet...could be the "killer application" that makes Archos 605wifi into the real big time!
"The ARCHOS 605 WiFi is the only PMP with the capability to watch Web video (YouTube, DailyMotion) right on the device. When surfing on video sharing sites, you can choose to stream the video you selected inside homepage or full screen."
The TV guide programming thing and remote for the DVR station having a keyboard also sounds interesting...as do quite a few other things.....sounds like it's going to be all the things we thought we'd get when the 604wifi came out.

I updated http://archosfans.com/2007/06/08/some-r ... ut-the-5g/ even though I shouldn't. I dunno how come Archos webmasters can make such a mistake, or else maybe this whole leakage of info is made on purpose. Or else this thing is just so awesome it's impossible for anyone to keep it secret.
Also Archos has been talking with so many people about this that all those people must be talking a little too much for marketing to stay on the plan.

Well, as the guy in the White House once quoted, "Fool me once shame on you, er, me, er....."
Haven't we heard this stuff before? Key words...plug ins ($), optional ($).
I think my four Archos device collection is about to end. I'm not reading anything that excites me as much as the PMA430 did (and still does) and the 604WiFi sort of did (and sort of still does). This time around a UMPC looms big on my horizon as the prices become more reasonable.
This also sounds the death knoll for 604 updates. My question is why the G4 series can't be updated to handle some of the items I see will be incorporated in the G5.

I think you are wrong about this one alan.. this product seems to be all that we have been waiting for since the first rumors about PMA430 was in development..
160GB version that is more compact and lighter than current 604 Wi-Fi, 800x480 with flash video full screen streaming support, Archos content portal with automatic download resuming of downloaded content, easy payments, tv program guide (just choose your favourite programs to record from TV in one click), a wireless keyboard to enter text for searching for online videos for example or browsing the internet more easilly, Upnp compatibillity among other things..
Also all that for just 200$ using flash memory 605 WiFi option.

Nah engadget is clueless. Archos prices in Ôé¼ and $ are always the same number, cause european prices have higher taxes to even out the exchange rate difference.
So 605 4GB would be 200$ and 605 30GB would be 300$, at least as long as the rumor posted in JBMM comes from somekind of reliable source, possibly many retailers are starting to receive the shipments of 5G in advance of the probable worldwide availabillity starting next week..
More days are passing, the more the leaks are inevitable.

Charbax, have you seen the new Raon Everun? If they can get it at a decent price point, say under $750, then I've got to go in that direction. It's about the size of a PSP, runs XP, has 7 hour battery life, BT2, WiFi, HSDPA, etc. Just can't see the 605W being that much better than the 604W, and in fact I still use the PMA/Giraffe because it's simply got the bells and whistles that I miss on the 604W (like QOffice, calendar, contacts, etc). I think the Raon may combine the best features of the PMA and the 604W, at least for me. Just my opinion. We'll see what the Raon brings to the table when it's available some time in July.
BTW, we have several friends visiting us from Shenyang. The family will probably be going over next summer. I'm looking forward to it.

I don't think that the type of Raon product is anything more than dissapointing quite rapidly for the owner. Other than huge price, weight, probably no built-in hsdpa and more, on top of that a totally useless integrated keyboard design. Also Windows XP is useless for portable use, you're not ever gonna be using windows xp only type of software on the go, and usage of any kind of Word type software is pretty much useless also.
As you see, I own a 404 that I got for 199Ôé¼ a month ago.Charbax wrote:The screen is not larger, it's better. And the weight is halved and the price halved. If you don't like it then I don't know what to tell you.
I have no interest in the flash versions, and judging by the 405, losing the HDD doesn't take half the weight, but only about 50 grams.
And before any reliable price announcement, all these rumors are pretty much useless, since the tech specs can only be judged in relation to the actual price.
