My New 4GB Turbo - Yuuuuuuup!

Post by Cyberpunk »

Not that anyone is interested but I picked up one of these "Used/Like New/Open Box" for 85 bones from a huge Amazon/eBay seller. Was supposed to be the 8GB model and "Like New". I would have preferred a Turbo model but everywhere they were 2 to 4 times the price, used! Ok, so I got it yesterday and I was pissed because, although the screen looked mint, the case appeared to be scuffed up front and back and when I checked under the kick stand the little silver s/n label said 4GB under the s/n. BASTAGES!!! It came with firmware 4.0.7 and ICS and it operated like crap with absolutely no GPS connection, ever. That was freaking it! I'm sending it back for a refund! Screw these dogs! I sent a request for refund through Amazon and I went to bed. Today, I looked at it again and simply gave it a good wipe down with a cleaning rag and poof! Not a scuff or scratch on it! It looked mint! Ok, so I decided to play with this thing a bit. I checked the insides and Poof! It has internal memory of 6.84 GB with 6.21 GB available. Obviously not 4GB as the Archos s/n sticker shows. In Settings/About the CPU shows OMAP4460, Board Version A80S-V5 and a couple of my toolbox/tuner apps shows its running at 1.2 GHz and also showed almost 1 GB ram! That's freaking it! I wiped the drive completely clean and downgraded to firmware 3.2.80 with Honey and Poof! This bloody thing works like a champ! Warp 9 speed, smooth and everything works perfectly! With GPS Test Plus and GPS Status apps the GPS connects with satellite every time and usually in under 6 seconds, a few times it took 15-20 seconds and a few times it was almost instantaneous, deep inside my house! In a closet! This Amazon/eBay seller has a bunch of these and apparently has no idea which one is which. So, I got me my 8GB Turbo model for 85 bones and after downgrading the firmware to Honey it seems to work like a gem. I've been playing with this thing all day and the only thing I haven't checked yet is the HDMI and driving with the GPS on. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be sending this back after all. Yuuuuuup!

Edit: Cool, the HDMI works perfectly.
Cool, 64GB thumb drive works perfectly in the 3G USB port. A flat slim-line stick and hollow out the 3G port cover and just
leave the thumb drive hidden in the 3G port and get double the fun.
Interesting: I registered it on the Archos.com and it let me transfer the registration to me. I also noticed when choosing the product it listed 6 different 80 G9's, Standard 8 & 16, Turbo 8, 16, 250 and "Staples 4 GB". Freak Me.

Hey mates, no cutting in line, but if anyone wants to make a comment on my observations, please feel free to do so at any time. No worries though. No need to rush.

I am so jealous! I bought an Archos 80 from Tiger for $125 but it was only 1 Ghz, though advertised as 1.2. It has 3.2.8 and works beautifully, and has only one not noticeable scuff. I use it constantly to play music and videos, look at photographs, and go online. One of my favorite apps is Tubex 1.7.2. I am starting to read books on it. I normally prefer my Kindle, but I have some books with color photographs and diagrams and these are so much better on the Archos. I love the GPS, too.

I am going on a trip to Europe and I am going to try to buy the 3G connector. When I am in Europe, I use my Archos for trading stocks.

I can't believe that the Titanium has a smaller screen and no GPS. That seems like going backwards to me.

Enjoy your new Archos 80. I am having a blast with mine.

I can't understand why they put GPS in the 80G9, 101G9 but not the 70b or the 43. They put it in the older 5it and then they skip the 7 inch 70b? Makes no sense.

I bought one of those Staples 4 GB tablets June of 2012 for $120. I was looking for a cheap eReader. It turned out to be an 8gig.
