Are you sure it is a battery (there are 2, one middle, other further to the right) that are getting hot? Or, is just the left side that is hot? The CPU, memory, and charging parts are all on the left side, and that side does tend to run quite warm at times.

The latest firmware(s) 4.0.24/25/26 have some major flaws. I noticed the CPU sometimes runs a lot hotter than it should now. And, there are a whole bunch of people complaining about slow charging, no charging at all, and/or the battery getting run down so low the device will not start up.

So, if it's only the left side that's getting hot it is not a battery problem, it's just this screwed up new firmware that's the real problem. Try unplugging everything, press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds (to reset the device and make sure it is totally off), and then plug in the wall power charger. Let it sit for about 5 hours and see if it will then come back to life.
