Going to upgrade from Archos 70 to a G9. Go 80 or 101?

Post by mitech »

Now that the new G9 models are out or coming soon, I want to upgrade from my current Archos 70. I really love this tablet, but I would like the new features and speed. I'm also considering which size upgrade to go with. I have felt like sokething a little bigger than the 70 would be nice. I like to watch videos on it and do some gameplay as well. So, are there any downsides to the 101 that I should consider?

Also, I assume the best option for a 101 would be the newer version coming this month (Feb.)? Any opinions on performance of video or games when using either the classic or turbo versions of the G9 tablets?

Thanks in advance for any help with my decision.

The most important thing would be what form factor you'd prefer in a tablet. I upgraded from a 70 250 gb to an 80 250 gb 1.2 turbo, as I don't really like the 10 inch tablets. I find the 80 to be much faster, snappier and better performance. It is heavier though. I haven't actually played with the 101 g9, but my assumption is that they are similar to the 80 under the hood.
Best of luck.

Here is my 2 cents:

Both tablets are equivalent performance-wise, this is more a form factor issue. If you want to play movies, go for the 101, it has the proper aspect-ratio. If you want to read and surf and prefer smaller size go for the 80. Last, I wanted 80 and went to 101 because of ripple effect problem on 80. I don't know if the issue is solved now, but it was present on all 80 and not on 101.

Do you really want to get rid of the a70 with it's super light weight and front stereo speakers? A 101 makes a perfect complement to the a70 because it is almost like a small laptop for big screen tasks. But you won't hold it one handed so effortlessly like the a70, so if you really are getting rid of the a70 maybe go for the more modest weight and size of an 80. It's screen is larger in area than you would think from that diagonal measure, because it is more square.

I just got my 80 G9 on Friday from Amazon. I am kinda glad to see that I am not the only one having the flash video problems. I have only tired watching Big Bang Theory on CBS. After too many freezes, I just gave up and watched it on my laptop. Of course, it was flawless on my laptop.

I would love to watch Hulu Plus and Netflix, but I am afraid to see how it will turn out...

I too am VERY attached to my Archos. I love everything else about it!

(I did upgrade to the new firmware when I got it on Friday.)

Don't forget there is also the option of a 70b. You can read my personal take on this, in the following thread:
