Latest updates of Archos Generations.

Gen6: 21 apr. 2011(two and half year of updates)
Gen7: 21 apr. 2011(one and half year of updates)

For me it's enough, and in 2013 this things will be as outdated as hell(iPad too!) and for the price of Archos I don't mind buying a new one that time.

Gen 8: last update Aug. 2011

Now that there are more & more android tablets, update support beyond the first year wiil determine which tablets are the top of the heap. Battle of the firmware updates. Who will come out on top?

Firmware updates are generally to fix bugs. Hopefully most of the bugs are worked out after a year.

Now OS updates would be great. Archos recently announced on its facebook page that the gen 8 devices may get updated to Gingerbread.

Why not wait until ICs comes out? then there should be more chance of future support, as it is supposed to be a unified OS.

Because Archos always brings 1 android update(G8 will may be get two), we should get ICS.

So, can the g9 101 play full bluray rips. i've been waiting for this answer for months and all i keep seeing is that it play x264 high profile 1080p. however that does not mean it will play full bray specs. has anyone tried this? whats thd success rate? can it consistently handle 20+ mbit 1080p l4/l5 h264? what about vc1?

for me this would be the only selling point, which would convince me it might be worth putting up with poor qc and lack of support, that apparently still plagues archos. If it cant then i'm still stuck transcoding to 720p which works fine on my tf already using handbrake.

i know some people have some commercial 720p content that archos is without a doubt better at, but everything i have is 1080p bray spec or dvd.

Blue ray films are encoded in H.264/Mpeg-4. x264 is simply a publicly available free software than encodes in H.264. In the G9 spec its states it can play "H.264 HD (HP@L4.2, up to 1080p@30 fps and 1080i/720p@60 fps)".

yes sorry i transposed an x for an h. I am well aware of the specs for h.264 and i have read the archos spec, but as i stated that does not answer my question. it could play 5mbps hp and they would claim they meet the spec, but no bluray would work. also just because they dont say they support the higher end L5 h.264 doesn't mean they don't.

You'll have to make a small sample, and upload it here for someone to try. There are utilities that can be used to take pieces of videos by their keyframes without re-encoding anything and hence, keep the video format intact. It's the same reason i post video samples rather than just go by specs. If we were to just take 1080p support by their word, then the china tablets have already been capable of doing that since mid last year.

samples are pointless except to analyse why something doesn't work. i want to know if people are successfully playing bray rips, if no one has played a commercial bray rip yet then i'm guessing it doesn't work, but let me ask it another way, has anyone managed to make a video too intensive for the g9? has anyone explored its upper limits?

that may be the exchange rate, but something that costs 500 pounds almost never costs more than 500 us dollars once it gets here. if i recall the tf was 379 pounds and debuted in the us for 399. still 500 dollars is a little steep unless it can dual boot win 8.

still no answer though, can the gen 9 play full bray specs? i can't imagine no one has tried. i will not be buying a new tablet until there is one that negates transcoding.

Seem the 101 G9 is the way to go for videophiles, but if not one, there are better specced' tabs for the same price in the US. Regardless, I would hold off on a quad core Android tab. Due to the dramatic change in design of the chipset, the costs are high, so you are paying on the high end of the cost curve.
