Typical Archos - all over the map - as this page still says 'Up To 1.5Ghz' - http://www.archos.com/products/gen9/arc ... us&lang=en

For next time, read the product information. ;)

ÔÇó ARM dual-core CORTEX A9 OMAPÔäó 4 up to 1.5 GHz

btw. UP means the highest possible frequency, not the normal freq.
In my mind, when a app needs a higher freq. so the device will spend this freq. The other direction is when you need not the power, the CPU can use a lower freq when the normal freq. ;)

It's good for battery life.

In my mind, this behavior is normal. I remember about a statement for the old archos devices...

the lower frequency should be much much lower in idle
they decided to change specs to 1.2 or its a typo

No. In my mind, you have a lower freq., a normal freq. and a higher freq.
The lower freq. is when device is in idle state or a kind of this (apps which use the DSP (if available) for example).
The normal freq. (in this case 1,2 GHz) when the device is working in normal state.
The highest freq., when the device needs more power than normal (games for example).

Remember. More CPU power, more battery drain. The power schema is inefficent in this case.

It seems 1,5 GHz is for public relations only. ;)

Yes. And in advertising and product specs you list the max freq., not some arbitrary 'normal' freq.
1.2 GHz is not 1.5 GHz. Overclocking capability does not matter. What matters is the maximum speed the CPU will run at out of the box.

When the device decides automatically. Where is the problem? :?:
1,5 GHz fix or up to 1,5 GHz when needed. What is the better way? ;)

1.5 GHz with overclocking option is better than 1.2 GHz with overclocking option.
That should be quite obvious.

We are following the TI roadmap of what we can have when we can have it.

Classic is DC 1 Ghz

Turbo is DC 1.2 GHz up to 1.5 GHz

Way to avoid our concerns. I understand you can only use what TI has made, but which one is Archos using. Are they going to use the 1.2GHz because it is available sooner or are they waiting until the 1.5GHz is available?

Also, anyone remember when Gen9s first started to get talked about and there was a slide that showed they were going to use a 1.6GHz dual core?

EDIT: @moderators or Charbax. If the processor is 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz, the description for the Gen9 forum needs to change either way

What do you mean by "up to 1.5 GHz"?
People will get 1.2;1.3;1.4;1.5 randomly? or 1.2 in October up to 1.5 in January? or tablets have some sort of hidden OC:)

I'm no stalwart of the technological world, but is it possible that they are using "turbo" as they do in "Turbo Boost" for other processors? For instance, I have a first generation quad in my laptop that runs at 1.6Hz when you push the CPU. Otherwise, it "boosts" to 2.8GHz.

I'm not aware that ARM CPUs support something like that.

Even if: Turbo Boost only kicks in when only one core is used. So one could either have a dual core CPU running at 1.2 GHz or a single core CPU at 1.5 GHz, but not the dual core 1.5 GHz that Archos advertised.

I wouldn't get too excited. In the G 8 's we have 1GHz "overdrive" mode. I choose to either let the system control speed or force "powersave" or "overdrive" modes. If we're talking about the same arrangement between 1.2 and 1.5 GHz, ssssswwweeeet!

Craig,

Can you give us just a simple answer on the following question:

Can the Gen9 run @ 1.5 Ghz just like Gen8 ran @ 1 Ghz? Or will we have to overclock and hack the device to have 1.5 Ghz?

per Archos' Facebook page post from September 15th
Official Pricing

Archos 80 G9:
8GB 1Ghz: $299 (available on ARCHOS.com starting Sept. 20)
16GB 1.5Ghz: $329
250GB 1.5Ghz: $369

Archos 101 G9:
8GB 1Ghz: $369
16GB 1.5Ghz: $399
250GB 1.5Ghz: $469
So what do you think the prices will be if it turns out to be 1.2GHz processors?

1Gig ram, 1.6Ghz CPU -> 512MB ram, 1.2Ghz

My enthusiasm suddenly took a nosedive. Thank goodness i didn't get a pre-order email from my supplier prior to this. I went from "I'll definitely get it" to "I'll consider it after i get a look at kal-el".

Media playback features are an edge, but not when the rest is below average. And my supplier would probably have charged me $500 for this.
