Interesting. That is the first I have seen with a date associated. I am curious if they plan on still keeping the Gen 8 going as a mid-tier while the 9 can be the top tier. Price point would be an obvious difference. Also curious of the RAM. My feelings on the current device is that RAM is a far bigger concern to me than the processor. Obviously I cannot imagine they restricting the RAM or system memory in the high end devices as much as they do in the Gen 8s... but would even 512 MB RAM be enough? Will they reallocate the flash based versions to 1 GB system memory? More processor means a lot, but if they do not address these two issues people will be frustrated they still cannot use some of the high end apps.

Also curious what this may mean for official Flash optimization...

For Archos to succeed at a new straetegy of aligning with cellular providers, they're going to need to enforce stringent Quality Contol. Cellular providers won't tolerate a high return rate, at least in North America where the providers offer subsidized purchase prices in return for locking customers into expensive contracts.

Yes, if archo's short-changes their customers with less than 1GB of RAM, Gen 9 will die quickly. I don't care if these devices had 4ghz dual-core processors - if they don't have enough ram, it won't run well or multitask properly.

I'm hoping to see a high-end device with an updated PCMCIA Express slot so that the user doesn't have to pay for hardware upfront that they may never use, but can add in if the need arises. The ultimate in flexibility. Don't care if the device has to be a tad thicker to accommodate, designs that are too thin leads to fragility issues (just ask Apple)

In a perfect world, Android becomes so smooth and awesome, that Archos easily updates Gen8 to Honeycomb soon after the source code is released (any day now..), and Archos also plans to release the Arnova line, with RK2918 ARM Cortex-A8 at 1.2Ghz and capacitive screens, this means the Arnova will probably take care of further ARM Cortex-A8 sales for Archos in the coming months.

For the record, I would pay another $350 for an Archos 50, with the 1.6 GHz dualcore, 512MB of RAM, an IPS screen, and similar features to gen 8. Of course it will need 2.3 and 3.0 promised, and GPS would certainly help but isn't required.

I would like to think that Archos are making some more high-end tablets with Gen 8. Even at the $300-450 price point like their previous gens, they would be a bargain compared to others on the market.

That would be pretty awesome. If Archos was able to come out at that price point, I may be donating my current 70 to my wife and getting a Gen9. This just proves my point before of why I did not want to pay $600+ for a Xoom, iPad, Galaxy, etc. I can (did) buy a A70 now, and in a year or two another device that blows anything currently available out of the water for same/less than what you can buy "cutting edge" now but will soon be "meh". Technology changes way too fast to spend that kind of dough on something that will be out dated in a matter of months...

This is a very good point in the consumer electronics market and I agree. Though there are some exceptions, paying twice as much for that last 10% of performance/features/excellence is almost never even remotely worth it in the consumer electronics department because of how fast things become obsolete.

i don┬┤t believe that they update gen8 or the arnovas to honeycomp.
arnovas will get gingerbread, gen8 will not, since the arnovas will most likely replace the gen8 once they come with capacitive touchscreen and rk2918.

something that would be nice would be a 4" archos-phone (250Ôé¼) and a 3.5" arnova-phone (150Ôé¼).

Given the reports that all the gen 9 units will have 3G radios, I think your estimates are low. I woul d raise your guestimates by $80-$100. Lets hope Archos is working with a different Chinese partner. Given the fiasco with the USB host port failure plaguing the 101, Archos may rue their proposed alignment with cellular carriers. A similar, widely ocurring hardware failure with cellular providers on the hook would certainly damage Archos. Archos would be crazy to buy the gen 9 tablets from the same contractors producing the gen 8 tablets, given the build quality issues. I also don't think Archos will compete well with the WIFI-only Honeycomb tablets coming from the big name players like Toshiba, Asus, etc. Prior to the eartquake in Japan, the prices announced ranged as low as stood $490.

From what I've read Archos plans to shake up the telco market. Let's see what they have in mind. Perhaps dual sim slot?
