This seller has upgraded the unit to the Intel 455. The ebay site does NOT show the HDMI port, only a VGA port. Also this unit does NOT have Bluetooth. Additionally, how good is Customer Service?

Very interesting device if it indicates Win7 tablets coming to the market.

This topic should really be in the Competitors forum and will probably be moved there soon.

Thanks for the report...

in the ebay description it has VGA port with wire switching(im pretty sure its aimed at people who only want to connect to PC monitor, in which ull need an hdmi mini to vga converter cable)..it is an HDMI mini port. i dont have a mini hdmi cable to test it. it does NOT have bluetooth, correct. i dont use bluetooth much anyway, but i do have a usb dongle that w7 had perfect integration with. i have no need for BT. its cool to have..but im not interested in it. wasnt even close to a deal breaker to me. i like earbuds and there arnt any BT one ive found for decent price for me. and i have a hub that has keyboard/mouse/micro usb cable comin out of that i switch between my tablet and netbook(connected to TV)..so i just plug the cable in plus it charges it as well.

as for customer service..this comes from china manufacturer = little support. the guy does have the small warranties and is really exceptional with communication.

I've got a couple of USB BT dongles so I should be able to get BT on it. Which Win7 is installed?

How are Videos via Hulu, YT, etc.?

Thanks,

There are ever more varieties of this tablet showing up, including BT and various storage options. I snagged a not very good deal on amazon just because I have their gift cards and am getting tired of my apple-only laptop environment, (and should let me wait longer for an ideal archos instead of the next rebadge).

I saw 4 variations on Amazon USA. I decided to go with the Asus EP121 which I should get tomorrow, 7 Mar.

Unfortunately again I did not get the hdd version. Flash is probably dumb with windows tabs because much of the expensive stuff is consumed by bloatware, and doesn't extend battery duration because you practically have a vacuum cleaner fan running to cool the massive cpu chip anyway. Oh well, at least I can get some powerful "apps" when I really need them.

I'll make a few observations about my cheapo sino-tablet. Keep in mind I have little knowledge of, or love for windows, and the tiny manual is nearly inscrutable.

For some things, maybe it is an issue that I have to find more software. What good is the capacitive 2 finger screen if I can't pinch to zoom - it only seems to allow 2 fingers on a soft keyboard (cap key - whoopie). The hdmi port doesn't seem to output a useable signal for tv, unless you use the included adaptor to change to a vga cable - yuk.

Screen real estate is very wasted, but if you start clicking options to hide toolbars or fullscreen, things can get stuck in modes where you have no button to back out or quit or shutdown. I wonder if the hole in the back marked >o< is a reset?

Setting up Mac address filter for wifi was really hard - you seem to need terminal mode where it was nonobvious how to bring up a keyboard there. It's hard to read fonts on the screen, let alone when the soft keyboard obscures the target field like it usually does. They didn't include a usb-usb cable to download from macs, but did include a lan adaptor for some reason.

I could go on and on, but it is my little bulldozer to get things done that are tricky on other devices. Noisy, not the greatest screen, and with a plummeting battery level - it's not so much fun but it does the job. Preferable over a laptop, because it lets me sprawl any old way instead of sit upright.

Aloha Steve,

It's fantastic!!! :D

I've had it since Monday. It came with Win 7 HP, Intel i5 1.33GHz mobile processor, 4GB Ram, 64GB SSD. I've got a 64GB SDXC card coming in Friday. It's just as fast as my Dell Inspiron 530.

Today I tested it with a Vivitek H1080FD projector and the brite-View Air SyncHD wireless HDMI, the EP121 output a perfect 1080p image and I kept the image on the LCD display as well.

The EP121 has Gorilla glass and Wacom digitizing HW including a Wacom pen. I can use it outdoor and still see a decent image.

With Win7 HP I run most of the same SW as my other WinBoxes (old stuff that Vista broke doesn't run) and don't have to worry about stinking Apps Stores or stinking Adobe certification of Flash.

I've already put my A9 up for sale in the A9 forum. The A9 was ok to get a feel for Windows on a tablet. But the EP121 is a real productivity slate. And the first of it's kind.

The Android OS has been a mess for tablets since its inception and with Honeycomb and beyond I expect Android to still be a mess. So I'm looking forward to the coming generations of 7 and 10 inch Windows slates which I expect to be better than the EP121.

At $1100 my EP121 ain't cheap, but it sure is good and it even fits (with folio) inside my ScotteVest Tropical Jacket/Vest.

Yep, I'm a happy haole gator :D =D> :D

Congratulations, Allen! What's funny is that even two or three years ago $1100 would have seemed like a bargain... Consumer electronics just keep getting cheaper and our expectations keep rising. Now you've got me SERIOUSLY Jonesing for a Windows 7 tablet :x

Allen,

It sounds real nice. Is there a dedicated forum for the EP121 like the A9 has?

I still like my A9 an have installed ACAD on it but I really like the speed to start and stop my A70 to hop on and check mail or archosfans and then hop off. This is something the A9 would not do and I did not want to revert to an old BIOS to see if it would go into hibernate.

With that, does the EP121 hibernate cleanly?

Thanks Mike! I've been checking for the last year and $1100 seems reasonable for the EP121's specs. And I do expect some Good 7 and 10 inch Windows Slates out this year.

The Shutdown menu has sleep and hibernate. I haven't checked either yet.

The EP121 forum I'm using is at Tablet PC Review. Asus also has its own forum after you register. (Hear that Archos!!!) I haven't been there yet, I've been too busy configuring and testing.

I did something today I never thought I'd do again: I bought MS Office 2010 - Home and Student 3 pack - $120 at Costco. I got if for MS OneNote which folks are raving about on the EP121 forum and in YT videos. OneNote was $68 by itself at Amazon USA so now I have 2010 Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote for 3 PCs (non-commercial) at $40 a PC. Because of MS Office 2010 and LiberOffice I don't really care anymore what Oracle does with OpenOffice.

For that kind of money, I'd rather fly from Copenhagen to Hawaii and to Hong Kong and back than to buy a Windows x86 tablet, probably too heavy and software probably too unusable to actually use more than 5 minutes.

Considering that five years ago $1000 for a Windows notebook computer was pretty average, the price of the tablet seems reasonable, given that it is a relatively new form factor (look at the cost of an iPad/Xoom/Galaxy Tab, etc. Heck, look at the off-contract price of an iPhone 4!). Granted, it is high relative to other tablets out there (see paranthetic comment above) but the point is that if you want a Windows tablet NOW this is the price of entry into the field. I'd certainly pay it if I had it... As I don't, I won't

You can get an officially refurbished Archos 9 pctablet for $350 today http://compare.ebay.com/like/1706147359 ... 602_309572

Though, even being top number 1 most sold Windows x86 tablet maker, Archos doesn't care enough about Windows x86 tablets to continue making them until Windows comes to ARM Processors by the end of the year. Until then, the Windows x86 product segment is just too expensive, too heavy, too slow, too bloated, too unusable, too unproductive, too complicated, too buggy for Archos to want to deal with support and manufacturing problems. They leave it to Hanvon, Asus and whoever else wants to make them for $1000+ if those want to insist using Intel.

Of course, I had forgotten about the A9! I am looking forward to seeing what happens when Windows starts running on ARM powered devices...
