Dropping Wi-Fi

Hello all,
just bought the A70 (had A7 for about 4 month).
First to say, the A70 is wayyyy better than the 7.

But if I turn on the Wi-Fi and try to connect to a network, it starts to obtain Ip address and then turns it self OFF.
Turns back ON again.
When I delete the previous network, it finds it again, then I enter the password and same happens again.
The wi-fi tap show SCANING....Obtaining IP Address....TURNING OFF all the time.

The version says 2.1.4 (Android 2.2.1)
Is this the latest version or Am I doing something wrong?
I cant connect to the network to update the firmware (if there is any)

Also what are the steps to connect via my laptop? I have wireless enabled, connected to the network via LAn cable of wireless.
I'm a little bit n00b in setting up networks

Please help.

Hi I have the same problem as you. Nice Forum user here pointed me to download new firmware to laptop, transfer file from laptop to A70 using the included wire, then restart with new firmware. It fixed to problem. Unfortunately dropping happens again after a day, but this time I restarts the A70 and it will reconnect. So the problem is less serious. I am looking for longer term fix. Hope it helps.

Yikes, I'm not too great of an wireless router set up person neither, better check with other experts, sorry.

No bother,
I believe theres something wrong with the unit itself. Also noticed that when I don't touch it some apps just start from it self even if I dont open them.
Is this standard?

Nope, I think you have a bad unit in that case.

There are several things that could be the problem, and not all of them are caused directly by your Archos unit.

First, after you updated your firmware, did you do any type of Android reset or initialization? It is not required between the two versions that you are working with, but it also seems to resolve many problems that still linger, so keep that in your back pocket.

Next, if you did not do any type of reset, did you tell your Wifi manager to "forget" your connection, and then recreate it? The reason why I recommend this is that the new 2.1.08 FW addresses a wifi problem, so I feel it is advisable to do this if to make sure it was remembered with the newest FW.

Lastly, what have you done on your router side? Have you rebooted it since these problems started? Is there a newer FW available for your router? Some issues seem to be resolved this way, as well. Even though all of your other clients work fine, that doesn't guarantee that the issue isn't rooted with your router.

I did full reinitialization this night, but in the hotel i'm staying in has only LAN cable connection (which I'm using for my laptop)
As for the router, I'm connecting (or trying) to it in my work, so I guess its kind of enterprise network, secured with WEP2. After entering the password it says connecting, obtaining Ip and then turns itself off, then back on again.The laptop connects without any problem.
The router does not have any reset button or connect button. I turned it of then on again.
When I bought the tablet 3 days ago I was able to connect on the airport to a network.
Then i turned it of to test the connectivity, and since then I'm not able to connect to anything.
The bluetooth is also acting strange. it says paired with iPhone but not connected. I cant even tether, at one point it was connecting and then said unable to tether
I really like theA70, but this is a letdown.

Well, did firmware update on friday night, then saturday night full reinitialization
today just came back from shopping mall and I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT TO WI-FI
I hope it will work from this moment.
Will try it in work tomorrow.

I'm having the same problem with barackuda:
I purchased an Archos 70 250gb few days ago
first thing I did update an Android version 2.18(Android 2.2.1)
second is Firmware update
after that the WiFi seem like dropping and today it can not connect to my WiFi network(Its keeping connecting and then disconnected)
Any help with info here would be appreciated!

Joe, what type of connection are you trying to make and what type of security is it using? (i.e. 802.11 b/g/n/ and WEP/WPA/WPA2?)
Is this happening on your home network or some other network?

One other thing that I always suggest to people having wifi connection problems... When your Archos is in the "broken" state, meaning it is actively disconnecting or will not connect, try rebooting the router right then and see if anything immediately changes. The most important thing to remember when debugging a problem is to only try one thing at a time, otherwise when the problem goes away it is impossible to know for sure which change did it. It takes longer than doing them all at once, but then you can determine the source of the problem.

Basic list of things to try when having wifi connection issues. (This is in the order that I would do them myself)

1. Make sure you have latest Archos FW installed on device (2.1.08 at time of writing - each version seems to address some Wifi issues)
2a. If you have just updated your FW and the problem started or is continuing, then do a "Reset Android" or "Full reinitiaization" (Painful as it is, it is amazing how many quirks this seems to resolve)
2b. If you did not just update your FW, then just turn off then turn back on wifi (I do it through the Archos provided "Power Control" widget)
3. Completely "Power Off" the device, and then turn it back on
4. "Forget" network connection under Settings-Wireless & networks-Wifi Settings, then long press the connection to get menu. Then reconnect and remember connection
5. Reboot wireless router and check FW version of router. Upgrade router FW if newer one is available.

IMO, if you are having Wifi problems, it is very important to make sure that both the router and Archos are running latest FW's. Just because your router works fine with all of your other devices does not mean the problem is not your router.

I know you have tried some of these steps, but hopefully this list will help others.

I can connect to a non secured wi-fi in a shopping mall. However in a WEP secured network at work it keep turning on and off the wi-fi.
Will try to reset the router today, and after check the connection.
I hope I wont end up connecting to non secured only. that would be really not good.

2.1.8 did fix my access to the local OPEN hotspot i frequent, but this is the first secure hotspot I've used since 2.0.71(which worked at a hotel)

Archos seems to fix one problem, while creating another......

I can understand your hesitation connecting to an open network, but since it now takes less than a minute to crack a WEP encryption, you are really not much safer connecting to it. You should encourage your business to change to WPA2 (our company was in the exact same boat for a while.)

Also, in order to get true "N" connectivity, WEP is not supported, so I am assuming that this is an 802.11g access point that you are trying to connect to? Is the router/access point new or old technology?

1. I have the latest FW on Archos
2. My Archos device work fine on the others wifi network (at school, public places...), that means my modem is getting old (I'm using Telewell WLAN-AP 802.11 b/g seem like it miss the "n").

4rthur87, I'm not familiar with the Telewell, but something new popped up in one of the other Wifi problem threads that could shed some light on this situation. Does your device support any special features like "stream management" or "intelligent media handling?" It appears that these features have caused other people problems with their Archos connection. If your device has any special mode that you are not using, I would recommend disabling them, even if you think they should have no effect on this problem. I would also check to make sure that your modem has then latest firmware, too.
