alleged 1 click root on 101

Saw this post on another forum claiming they can give you root on the 101.

Archangel one-click-root from the Archaism Team

This will give you temporary or permanent root on your Archos 101 - firmware 2.0.71

Archos are kind enough to provide a SDE firmware which can allow root access,
but involves some significant changes to the system and they say that they will
invalidate your warranty if you install it. This is a bit frightening for new owners.

Archangel solves this with a painless one-click-root which you can uninstall at any time.
It does not use the SDE developer firmware.

This was specifically designed for the Archos 101 with firmware 2.0.71 - it may work on
other Archos devices or firmwares, but has not been tested and is not recommended for them.

Not sure if I trust it myself.

Personally I'm wary because they have just joined MoDaCo and there is no mention of such a root on a dedicated Archos site like this one.

Come on guys, what's the worst that could happen. It is just a new poster on an annonomous forum telling people to install software that will bury itself into the core functions of the computer. Its fool proof... (joking for anyone who couldn't tell).

-EDIT- It is also posted up on XDA. There are some people looking into it. I have no knowledge if it works or not, so don't let my sarcasm deter anyone who may be curious...

I'v been looking into it and already saw some strange things. I have not installed it myself but some people have and at least one of them had is google account disabled. I don't want to be a doom sayer but caution is advised.

I just did it on my 70 and all is working fine. Takes like 20 sec to root. So far so good.. You can get it here

So now my question becomes... why should we root? I know about Titanium Backup, which seems nice. I have also heard that you can more effectively use Automatic Memory Manager. But since overclocking does not need rooting to work, what real benefit are you going to realize? Thanks

I use it for SetCPU, which allows me to set up profiles. I've got one set for when I'm charging (1GHz) and another for regular (600MHz).

With the script run at boot time, it may be possible to move the /data partition to a different location -- ie a 512M or 1024M partition on an SD card. This might admittedly require a "real" root, though.

If nothing else, it will allow you to create an arbitrarily-sized swap file. You'd want to do this on a Class 6 or 10 sd card, and probably not larger than 128M or 256M at most, though.

So... Swap, backup and (maybe!) a larger /data partition. The backup is what is most attractive to me -- having to download, re-install and reconfigure all my apps after a full reset is a pain.

With that said, I'm waiting until those smarter than I have finished ripping the app apart and making sure it doesn't have any naughty bits hiding inside. It's been confirmed to actually work as root-app on 2.0.71 and 2.1.02, but just because it gives root isn't to say that it doesn't also fire off a packet of login credentials when it's executed. Any app that has internet access has the potential to do bad things, but given that this is one has root access, which means that it can see *everything* and was written by someone who knows enough about Android to break in, it is far more likely to be evil.

"more likely" however, is relative. It will almost certainly turn out to be only the tool it is advertised to be, with no malicious payload. But I intend to wait a week or so to be sure.

It may require internet access in order to get around the firmware. Some at xda have noted that the hackers name comes up in SMB and then disappears. Could be malicious, or the reason how the FW was able to be rooted. Overall, I am still on the fence of whether I want to root this thing or not, with the new FW and all...

no, i'm wrong, nobody was able to connect to my gmail account, BUT google disabled my account (all google services, not only gmail) because of "suspect activities". Now i received a new password and it's ok.... but didn't tried to root my archos again...

i'm not sure it's linked, but... it's the first time I get a problem with my gmail account in +-5 years... just a few hours after the root

And, co-incidentally, Google disabled my account too, just after installing this "Root hack". google forced me to reset my password. Which meant I had to reset the password on all my Archos devices - not easy.
