Power issues with new software update.

Post by famac! »

Newbie here with an 8GB 101. Selling it soon for the 70 as it is too big for my needs. With the new software update, my 101 has been behaving really strange. I have had unexplained battery drains and a refusal to start unless i hold the power button (and sometimes the vol down button) for over 10 secs. Anyone else having similar issues after the latest update?

Yes, mine seems to not want to come out of "stand-by" mode and needs a 10 second reboot to work. I set mine to go into standby after 10 mins btw

The auto-brightness setting isn't working in the newest FW. You may want to get in the habit of checking the screen's brightness setting once you've turned on your unit after recharging. When I powered on after my last recharge, I didn't and the brightness went to 100%. It ate through my power very quickly before I checked the screen brightness in settings (the screen consumed over 70% of the power expended before I readjusted it's brightness level down--I dropped from 100% to 80% very rapidly).

I've had the refusal to come out of standby a couple times, but overall battery life has been better at 1ghz on this version than at 800mhz on the last version.

Thank you for posting this, its good to know I'm not alone.

My 101 had been working very well since taking delivery some weeks ago (well except for some networking issues that seemed to be fixed in the latest firmware) but after
updating the firmware last night, its a brick this morning. No power at all, and wont come back to life. Also no green light, even when on charge. And yes I think the charger is still workling, judging from the heat inside the 101 near the dc socket.

A couple of question/coments I would like answers to, if one of you with the same problem would be so kind .....

1. Is your 101 as dead as mine, ie no green light ?
2. I think there is a chipset revision on these, maybe only a certain chipset version is affected.
3. Maybe this is a software issue. I have some software that prevents the device sleeping. Perhaps the 101 new firmware exhausts with this. It had no problems however prior to the firmware upgarde and no problems on my nexus 1.

And, I don't beleive it, the device is ALIVE. Thank you once again, I had tried both buttons for what would seemed an eternity several times this morning with no response. After reading your post that a combination of buttons for a vary long time yeilded results I have just copied this, holding down various combinations for about 30 secs, then random combinations and behold, the green light is back HOORAH!!!

I was convinced it was time to RMA the Archos, and for the second time after earlier network adapter issues. It will be interesting to see if this is going to be a reccurring problem. One last bit of info, the battery was at 50% (after only 10 mins charge) when I had assumed that it may have exhausted and thus malfunctioned, but evidently not the case.

A false alarm, ( sort of, as the device has always come to life ok before today ) and I am very pleased about that :)

I suppose my questions are a bit irrelevant since the turn of fortune half way through typing this, except for no green light on charging, is that normal? Its back now, as soon as I connect the charger.

I have the same problem after last update. Device refuses to start up, needs to be reset and drains the batter over night. It happens quite often and it's a problem introduced in last update. Tried deep sleep but I think the battery drain still happens.

Since the update last night my battery light doesn't flash when charging is complete. It just stays on continuous green even after an overnight charge. Is anyone else having the same issue?

I think we all need to continue to monitor this today and try different settings for battery and such. Also, I updated my market yesterday and things are acting better. I don't believe I have had a reboot or lock since. I will post again later to confirm. However, if it does continue, I think we all need to start calling Archos as let them know. I have my brightness at 50% and power management on overdrive.

Funnily enough, it does flash when the unit is on and fully charged.

Is there auto brightness in the 101? There's no light sensor n hence should not work.

Archos really does have some work to do to clean up this last software update. Drained again overnight but this time when i fully charged it, the led flashed to let me know it was done.

I have a problem too with my Mom's 101 after the update. Monday night it drained the battery overnight completely and would not come on. It did the same thing Tuesday night. I caught it still discharging the second time. The lower left corner was warm and I could have sworn I did a shut down, not sleep when turning it off. It was too low to power up. I just upgraded it to Froyo a few days before and was getting ready to wrap it for Christmas. That's just great! I've been playing with this thing for several weeks with no issues at all.

This is a very bad problem! Each time a rechargeable battery is fully depleted the battery life is significantly shortened. The old nicad batteries could be drained down to a low level to exercise them but the newer lithium and NIMH batteries do not require this and should not be cycled. Running any rechargeable completely flat is never ever a good idea.

Yes. Mine is doing that, too. It also sometimes acts as if the battery is drained. I installed battery monitoring software and the graph will sometimes show a good charge at over 70%, then at next power on after hibernate, the graph will show it below 40%. I frequently have the long push required to start it.

Also having irritating power issues since new FW.

I've had the issue with the mysterious overnight power drain, the unrecoverable deep sleep. I've also had a day when I watched the power go from 42% to 5% in a matter of 20 minutes. Then I've had two days, today beig one of them, whe I've left my 101 to charge overnight, I've woke to the flashing green power led, and on unplugging the charge was only 83% and needed topping up again.

I've also had days where the bttery life was very credible.

I notice that on days like today with a dodgy 'full' charge the system slows down and the keyboard becomes sticky even after restart...

Looks like I'm not the only one. Has anybody had any luck contacting Archos? I haven't had time to determine if I'm experiencing battery drain yet but will report back if I do. I started a new topic about this when I first logged on. Definitely something we all need to monitor closely and hope that Archos acknowledges the issue and addresses it quickly.

i am starting to think my battery is not draining completely but going into deep sleep. If I leave it overnight, it just won't power up. This morning, I couldn't get it to power on unless the power cord was connected for about 5 minutes. Then I could long press and it powered up. Interestingly enough I had like 50% battery. For some reason I thought it was drianing completely but it's not. Big bug, hopefully Archos will fix it in the next release. Kind of annoyying to have to pack the charger all the time to turn it back on. I thought maybe it was Wifi power draining but now I am not so sure. It worked just fine before the last update though. Problems only started last Friday with that update.

While not having the level of issues others are posting I thought I was in the clear after the new market update. However yesterday I noticed while not using it but having it next to me , it rebooted 2 to 3 times for no apparent reason. I just happen to glance over and caught it starting up again. I am using overdrive.

Is this something everyone with the new firmware is experiencing, or is this only occurring for some? I've got a new 101 uder the tree for my wife and I'm wondering if I should install the new firmware or not?
