Custom 101 case - Interest? Ideas?

Post by sequitur »

I have been looking for a case for the A101 and have yet to find anything I really like. Because we manufacture sewn products we began discussing making a case. One thing I don't like is that the interior of these cases is always 3x too wide for the thickness of the 101. Another is that they don't seem to have adequate protection for the screen should it encounter a blow to the screen side. The following are the ideas we have so far...

1) heavy nylon exterior, possibly with piping on the edges
2) magnetic top flap closure
3) soft snug interior
4) polycarbonate plate inside front with heavy foam spacer along outer edge to ride on frame and absorb impact
5) included micro fiber cloth and carry area
6) pocket for USB and HDMI cables
7) monogrammed "Archos 101" on front

So the ideas we are toying with are
1) monogram on the back "this is not an iPad"
2) pouch to carry USB drive
3) pouch to carry power adapter
4) carry handle
5) strap

Any input is welcome as well as what you think might be a reasonable price for a case which afford such targetted care and benefits. We haven't made a product quite like this but it won't be cheap. Then again neither is a screen replacement.

I can't help but wonder if a plastic pane in front of the screen would impair touch responsiveness or viewing quality. I would not think it would be worth it if that was the case, better to just go with it being a little recessed for protection. I also am skeptical of all the pouches and such, when they begin to protrude it causes problems. Someone would have to think along the lines of whether or not this is something to only carry it in or something you can use it in.

As to price, I profess I have no idea what manufacturing costs would be. The most I've felt comfortable with paying for a case is $30-$50 though, and that may fit in

I guess I wasn't clear. To me a full time case is pointless. It would add weight and bulk. I'm talking a piece of plastic strong enough to absorb impact. The idea is safe transport. It will not be visible.

2) magnetic top flap closure -Personally I'm not a fan of magnetic flaps
3) soft snug interior -Definitely, I hate cases that don't fit properly
4) polycarbonate plate inside front with heavy foam spacer along outer edge to ride on frame and absorb impact
5) included micro fiber cloth and carry area -If it increases cost, I'd leave it out
6) pocket for USB and HDMI cables -Pocket for USB, HDMI, and Power
7) monogrammed "Archos 101" on front -That would be nice, but might be overkill

2) pouch to carry USB drive

4) carry handle -Not for me, but a good idea for general use
5) strap -Like for a laptop? I wouldn't want that.
My answers are in red. I would love to see some custom cases.

Again I'm sure I'm in the minority here. Most people just aren't going to carry this much stuff with them. This is for traveling for me so I need everything that I would need in a rental car. If I were to build one from scratch it would be a book like zippered case with one side being a sleeve for the archos, and the other side being build in pockets for 2-3 cables, 2-3 devices. I could slide the A101 in/out with just opening the zipper on one end of the case. If I needed a cable I simply open it up like a book and slide out the cable. The whole point is that it actually looks like it fits accessories. I've seen so many netbook sleeves that I could put a bluetooth mouse in, but it would just bit a big bulge.

At some point my goal is to have the a101, Motorolla S705, bluetooth GPS, portable harddrive, possibly mouse and cables to power them all in one little case that I can just throw in my backpack while traveling. Also looks nice when I just want to carry it down to Panera. I'm sure the majority of people out there don't want something this thick.

I already bought a CD case that will work for this. (http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-Nylon- ... _rhf_p_t_1) I bought a 48 disk version from Frys for $6. I have to sew in some sort of sleeve, and then some sort of pockets.

Any case this size that I buy with handles, I just cut the handles off. I don't have large hands, but guessing people will smaller hands prefer handles I guess. The ~7in width to me just just perfect for gripping and carrying in 1 hand with no handle.

can you take the case logic 48 CD case and work from there?

either a zipper case, or slide-in.

light, snug.

no full-time case for me.

I like all the ideas. I like a carrying handle on mine as I dont want to "carry" the case. A microfiber cloth wont cost much so throw it in. I think a pouch for the charger is a bad idea because the charger is so big and wide.

I LOVE the idea of something hard in front of the screen to protect it but maybe something on the backside is also needed as being as think as these are, a good hit from the back could also damage it possibly.

I'd kill the archos but love the "not ipad" thingie. Would be interested in buying it. Especially with a thingie to go around the arm.

I would also like something like this: http://www.merimobiles.com/Herotab_RK7_ ... ri0519.htm

Honestly, what I want is something like the http://www.i-nique.com/detail.asp/cn=/c ... 5205276052 from Tuf luv. Anything less-customized could basically be replaced by a hard cd case.

I see VAJA has a case , more like a shoulder bag, Intended for the Archos 7, that I thought was really attractive. But, like everything else it demands a premium price $280, Check the link...

Oh well, this is for 101, not for 70, but nevertheless,

I'd like to have a case that can strap my Archos 70 snuggly and protect the screen,
has kick stand that can be rotated portrait or landscape,
has place for a bluetooth keyboard opposite the place for Archos 70,
has pockets for USB cables, charger, and microsdcard.
