Confirmed: Charging via Gomadic USB cable!

Post by kavawava »

Ok I hope the title wasn't too much of a misnomer, but with the USB cables that I got from gomadic.com (suggested by sequitur and techknow61 on this forum, thanks by the way! =D> ), I am able to charge my A70 with a USB battery through the DC port. Which works out well for the two 13 hour flights I have next week.

I used this tip:
http://www.gomadic.com/tip-27.html

With this cable:
http://www.gomadic.com/usb-cables-cat.html

And this battery:
http://www.amazon.com/Duracell-Instant- ... 239&sr=8-9

The proof:

The cable + tip:

Now, how quickly the battery gets charged I don't know yet. But I do have a NewTrent battery coming in from Amazon that puts out 2A so we'll see.

Hope this helps everyone! Enjoy

That's awesome news -- thanks for sharing!!

When you can, please let us know how the New Trent battery pack goes. (I almost pulled the trigger on that.) Thanks in advance!

i have a cord that fits the DC in, and the light turns on when i plug it into my pc. I wasn't sure about safety though so i haven't been using it.

i know my evo can charge both dc and usb, and usb is slower but better for battery. is it the same for the archos? or is there a reason they didn't release it with a usb charger?

I really don't know, so this is just a guess, but I would have to say that they didn't add the USB charging capability bec. each time you plug the USB in and then unplug it, it scans or indexes the drive/device (which depending on how many files you have, could take a long time and/or slow your resources down). I could of course be wrong  , but on a device that is a media player that has the potential to store a lot, I think that would be a deterrent from plugging it into the computer for charging.

All the best!

When I go to order the cable it wants to know what kind of device I have. When I select Archos 70 internet tablet, the cable isn't shown as an option.

Which device did you tell Gomadic you have so that you could get the correct cable :?:

Thanks!

Yeah this part is kind of tricky I had trouble with it too. What you have to do is search for a phone/device that uses another tip, and since their cables are universal it will fit. I got this one for the HTC incredible and it works just fine, they have other versions too (i.e. coiled, straight, etc). The cables are bundled with the tip, but since its just micro-USB, in this case, I wasn't too concerned.

does that make sense at all?
