Battery Constraints?

Post by AllenPapapetrou »

Aloha Folks,

I've got a second battery due in today. Got some questions:

1. Should I go through the drain to 15% a couple of times in first week?
2. Make sure I 40% drain once a week there after?
3. Will leaving the A9 connected to mains for extended periods hurt it?
4. How long will my fully charged spare keep its charge if not used?

Thanks,

Allen

From what I've read, the A9 charger isn't an intelligent one, so once the battery reaches full charge, the charger will continue to charge it, so once fully charged you should unplug it asap. I personally followed the 15% 40% drain schedule so far, and my battery life is hovering right around 4 hours.

any charger that charges a Li-ion battery has to smart enough to know when to stop, period. if it doesn't you risk exploding the battery. (what happens if you charge the battery overnight, you gonna get up at 2am to unplug it?) and I mean explode, have you ever seen a Li-ion battery explode? I leave mine plugged 24/7 have seen no ill effects, still get 4+ hours out of it.

Thanks for the replies. What minbari says about overnight makes a lot of sense. My 5IT and 7HT have the requirement that they are powered on during charging. I saw no such requirement for the A9.

I have not seen one explode in person, but I have seen numerous li-ion batteries swell due to overcharging, and thats what I was getting at. Im sure if you charged a li-ion battery long enough with high enough voltage it could absolutely explode, in the same manner a sealed AGM auto battery could explode if it were charged at too high of a voltage.

Hi,

You can't charge with "too high voltage". The voltage is always the same and is the correct one with the correct charger. A Li-ion battery can't overcharge.

The Archos 9 manual recommend to charge the Archos 9 when it is shut down and remove the AC Adaptor when you power it up. Probably due to the heat that Li-ion batteries doesn-t like when charging (I've read it somewhere ...).

Bye

You absolutely can overcharge a lithium ion battery. I wasn't talking about the charger being too high of a voltage for the A9, I was referencing the earlier post that lithium ion batteries can explode. It would take too high of a voltage with too much amperage over en extended period of time to make one explode. At the end of the day I know it takes to make a battery last, so I'll keep charging how I do.

Okay, I was misunderstood, sorry.

Btw, I noticed that during charging, the AC adaptator is hot, and becomes cool again as the battery is charged. I was convinced that there were some "intelligence" between the adaptator and the battery which prevent overcharge and deep discharge.

I haven't noticed that, but I just leave it plugged in until I see the light flashing, then unplug it

Just got my 6000mh battery today. I am currently timing the battery life after charging it 100%. Running Win 7 Ultimate. Will update.
