Trouble converting video to .avi format.

Post by ericdavies »

Hi peoples, hope someone out there can help me. I have recently purchased an Archos 2 Vision 8gb for my good lady. It comes with conversion software in the box (AVIConverter), however, when installed onto a Windows 7 PC, it will convert one movie only and thereafter it "hangs" on 99% and never completes. Can anyone suggest how to get around this (without having to uninstall and reinstall each time I need to convert a movie), or even recommend suitable shareware/freeware that can be used to convert movies without a hitch. Cheers in advance.

People seem to get along very well with HandBrake.

Thanks for the link. Now it's just a quest for the optimal settings. Any suggestions?

Just a quick follow-up re: HandBrake: The current version doesn't output to .avi, so Archos 2 Vision owners are out of luck unless we can get an older version of the app. I have, however, found HandBrake an essential tool for converting mkv files to mp4 so that Archos' bundled software can recognize and convert it.

What I've found out so far is that the converter software makes the avi file: 18 fps, rotated 90' cw, bitrate @600kbps, 12 bit sample size, FFDS compression, with an audio bit rate of 64kpbs.

Just a quick correction:

Should read: Conversion makes the avi file: 18 fps, mirror-flipped, rotated 90' ccw, bitrate @600kbps, 12 bit sample size, FFDS compression, with an audio bit rate of 64kpbs.

I'm going to dig out an old version of Media Cleaner and see if I can get it to be a more flexible app than AVIConverter.
