Does such a critter exist? I'm looking for something small enough to carry in my purse so I can update spreadsheets anywhere, plus something that'll play music and videos and allow for occasional web browsing.
I was originally eyeing up the Archos 5 and was disappointed to read that it's not spreadsheet friendly. Am I expecting too much from one gadget? I'm just now getting around to replacing my iPod Mini, so I'm not at all familiar with PMPs.
Thanks in advance for any info, even if it turns out my best option is to get a bigger purse and use a netbook .
The iPhone and open and modify Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.
Any *UNLOCKED* Android device should be able to view Excel spreadsheets with the correct program, I'd imagine a program to modify them as well is coming soon. Locked Android devices can only be used with programs the manufacturer allows them to run.

Have you seen the viliv s5 PC tablet/PMP? It uses win xp and includes trial version of ms office apps. ($647 US-- expensive!)
I use my Blackberry Pearl Flip for music everyday... it can open and Edit Word, Power Point and Excel and the Premium edition lets you create new files and insert all kinds of functions in the spread sheet.
The BB is great for music.... easy to navigate and to search specific songs, artist or albums... it also has a good Playlist function which can be Manual or Automatic. And you can listen to music while doing almost everything else including spreadsheets.
The Bluetooth feature is also a great thing to have... nothing compares to go wireless for music!... its a great feeling
Having a memory card slot is also very convenient, and being integrated so well as RIM does, is great. I can put up to 16GB of microSDHC (maybe 32) and it will transfer content very quickly, also playback pauses are short.
The model I have its not very good for movie length videos, not even half hour shows.... I just play video clips... cause it skip some frames and the screen its only 2.25". But the higher end models like the Bold (9000) or Javelin (8900) or the Storm (9500) for that matter are the better option if you want video playback... with screen resolution of 480x320 (Bold) - 480x360 (Javelin & Storm) and up to 3.25" screen (Storm)... With the only downside being the 65k colors instead of Archos 16 million...
They are good for occasional internet browsing
The general downside with this smartphones its the battery playback which its not that bad, but when you use the phone for many things other than just text and calls, the battery life its reduced a lot...
I charge mine an average of once a day... (sometimes twice sometimes every other day)
I normally text but I do get a few short calls
I browse internet and use internet data consuming applications such as Facebook
I listen to 3-4 hours of music (and half is over bluetooth)

If a BB is not appealing to you, check out other smartphones, they are the final destination for all PMP/Netbooks/Phones
so it seems a logic step to move from 3 or 4 devices to carrying 1.
And if you truly love an specific subject then keep a second specialized device such as Pro-Digital Camera or Video Player/Rec.
I still have an Archos that used to be my main mp3 player, but now its almost exclusively my Video Player
