Recording Sky+ and SkyHD...Help please..........

Post by StevePn »

Hi
Just waiting for my 605 to arrive. =D>
A couple of questions though.
1) :?: .....As I have never recorded to DVD etc from what I have pre recorded from Sky+, how do do go about it? I know you have to use the copy button somewhere, but help would be most welcome.
2) :?: .....If a programme has been recorded in HD, can it be put on the 605?
3) :?: .....How do you put your own DVD's onto the 605?

Thanks in anticipation :) .

There's loads of post on Sky, so maybe a quick search would help.
I assume you'll also have a DVR station as you'll need this to attach to the Sky box.

You can record direct from the Sky+ box while you are watching it - or set it up to play pre-recorded stuff during the night using the copy function for multiple programmes.
You can also set the DVR to record from the Sky box while you are out of the house, using the infrared signals. There are various models of the Sky boxes so a bit of trial and error is required.

There are loads of programs to rip your own DVDs into the correct format.
Again - another search of the forum would help you here.
I use DVD decrypter to transfer the VOB files onto the pc. You can copy these direct to the 605 (not sure if you need a plug-in to play them) or convert the VOB files using another software. I use AutoGK to convert from VOB to AVI. A 2 hour move converted to AVI is around 1GB, compared to 4GB of VOB files.
The software is free to download - just Google them.

The other option is to plug the 605 into the DVD player and record direct - but this doesn't allow you to watch the recorded files on your main or any other TV, only on the 605 - due to DRM compliance.

Not sure about recording from a SkyHD box - I assume this will be ok but won't be in HD format.
As far as I know you can't play HD files on the 605 - we've been waiting for a Plug-in that was promised at launch - but this is more likely to feature on the 5 and 7 series as the DVR for these features an HDMI port.

Enjoy your 605 - it may seem frustrating at times, but perseverence will see you through.

Yh the 605 will most likely play hd files, but even if it does i know this - hd files will take up alot of space, as it is hd. It will look really nice on the 605s amazing screen, but at a cost.
Hope this helps, and for what its worth, im getting my archos this week or next :) james

The 605 does not play HD files, and you cannot record HD programmes off of a SkyHD box in HD format - they will be SD only.

Just to make that even more clear.

If you record HD material on the Sky HD box then you can still record it on the 605, but as you only have S-Video or composite inputs you will just be getting an SD version of the material.

This ability to replay HD material and send an SD signal out of say S-Video while still displaying HD via HDMI or component is one of the more useful features of the Sky HD box.
