We are trying to see if the Archos 405/605 will work well as a method to record video from Microscopes of experiments. We want to use this video to be playable on mac/pc (basically as compatible as possible), expecially for insertion into PowerPoint.
We are getting mixed results. None of the AVI's produced will play on XP or Vista natively. We have to install the 'codec packs' for each OS before they will play. Even then, about half of the AVI's show the warning:
"Copy Protected Video File - Can only be played by the original recording device"
We are connecting the stereo to RCA cable to the travel adapter on the 405, using a RCA to BNC adapter and connecting that to the BNC out on the monitor which then is connected to a standard Digital camera via BNC. Camera's are basically simple 30fps NTSC cameras, much like what you buy for video survaillance, just with special lenses.
Anyone have an idea of how to get a more compatible format. I've tried the Super freeware converter, but not having much luck with it. A way to strip this copy protection? Again, I'm not recording copyrighted content, this is video we are producing.

The solution so far is to put a Macrovision filtering device in between the Archos and the signal.
I'm starting to guess that the Archos is reading any non-normal signal as a copy protection method. But that seems to also include inline time/date stampers, video queue markers, rulers/measures and many other signals that are introduced in normal NTSC regordings.
So far I've not gotten approval to purchase one of these inline boxes to see if it will filter this and if it filters the markers we need to show as well.
I want to know how the MPAA is forcing this and not forcing Radio stations, TV stations, etc to send out a similar disrupting signal. I can record programs just fine from those copyright institutions (ala YouTube). Archos needs to take a much more lenient stance on this in its interpreter.
Standard DVR's don't have to adhere to this and they can produce a signal to a TV. If they even made it so that it only played from the Archos it was recorded, but out to the TV out would be acceptible in my book as we could record off just like we do from a standard Video camera.
If we could afford it we'd just by Harddrive/flash based DVR's that are portable and anywhere near the price of the Archos, but I can only find 2 on the market, but you cannot buy them from US retailers which makes me think the MPAA got them band because they don't adhere to this same rule.
