Re: how is the sound quality of headphone out playing music ??
Hello
some folks have major complaints about both the quality & the volume from the 605, spending a lot of time & $ trying to remedy them. Personally, I find the sound from the device is acceptable- especially using over the ear headphones with closed backs. There is some hissing & crackling noise while using the wireless feature. there has been a post or two about outside signals interfering with sound or video playback- you might try a search on that topic.

I found the sound to be fine on mine, but I don't like my music very loud.

Sound quality is good enough if you buy some serious high-quality earphones. Of course it is not the best (e.g. Creative is better), but I find it acceptable. Of course you should have your music encoded at high bitrates (above 192 kbps).
Sound volume is low, but with noise-reduction earphones or with in-ear earphones it is loud enough (for me, but other people have complained a lot about the low volume).

Depends how fussy you are, what previous experience you have, and how you encode your music. Many people complain about the volume, but I find the hiss a bigger problem. Without the hiss you could overcome the volume limitation with a small amplifier like the Fiio.
But, in general, I find the sound quality to be OK for a player of this sort. It's perfectly listenable, in my view, although I prefer the sound I get from the earlier Archos models, or the Cowons.
To be honest, the only way to assess the acceptability of the sound is to listen before you buy. I certainly shan't even consider buying one of the new models until I've listened myself.

Sound quality is good, but if you're dropping that kind of cash into the headphones and amp I would suggest another player. One designed just for audio with a huge HDD to store all your audio in FLAC or WAV, if you care about sound quality that much I would say Cowon D2 is your best bet.
Re: how is the sound quality of headphone out playing music ??
I am inclined to agree, although I haven't really listened to the more recent Cowon models much. And the sound quality of the old AV500 is pretty good -- much better (in my view) than the later Archos models.Hubbard wrote:Sound quality is good, but if you're dropping that kind of cash into the headphones and amp I would suggest another player. It's odd that nobody make a true `audiophile' player -- something designed just for audio, with the same attention to detail in the analog parts that you'd get in top-notch hi-fi equipment. I'd certainly buy such a thing if it existed. But maybe it's actually impossible? Maybe putting all that digital stuff in such a small space makes it impossible? But, in any event, I'm sure it's possible to do better than most current players do.

what about one of these http://www.amazon.com/Cowon-A3-80SL-Por ... 295&sr=8-3 and i want one with good size screen to watch movies on the go
Re: how is the sound quality of headphone out playing music ??
The 605 is better than a lot of cheap mp3 players, but not the best. If you are willing to spend $350 you could wait for in-depth reviews of the Archos 5, and if sound quality has been improved, buy one of them.
