I had Archos 605 80GB + DVR station. But I have sold them now.

It is a great PMP, especially the screen quality and the amazing touchscreen. But i was nt utilizing it enough so I sold it off and got the Nokia 6500S, surprisingly the swf files run faster on the nokia than the archos ...LoL and I'll get the iPod touch soon.

I find the nokia as interesting as the archos (for their respective purpose). And one more thing, I now prefer iPod touch over archos, coz you can toss the ipod, just slip it into your pocket, no thought of Hard disk or pocket space... Both ITouch and archos are equally good...

No, I'll keep my A605 WiFi (160 GB), though I am very dissappointed in a number of areas:
a) Non standard USB cable
b) Pathetic case and exposed buttons
c) Hatred of having to pay for extras like A/V cables and "plugins". I relented and bought the cinema plugin, but no more!
d) inability to utililise HDD as I expected. On my old AV400 I could repartition the disk, and then encrypt a second (NTFS or whatever) partition to secure my documents and a VMware virtual machine. You cannot repartition the A605 disk, and you're stuck with FAT32 so you are limited to 2GB encrypted files. I have purchased a Western Digital drive which is great so now I have to carry the A605, a stupid USB cable and a second external disk drive. (grrr).

As an MP3 or AVI player it is great though - and I do keep a copy of my digital photo library on it also.

So you wouldn't mind paying more for your 605 and then get all the plugins with it?
I find it great to be able to choose what plugins you want and what not.

Please please please do not revisit the tired and extremely pointless argument of the plugin prices... If you research the device then you know you have to buy the plugins seperately. If you still go ahead with the purchase, or didnt bother doing the research, then do not come on here and complain about it.

i selected yes, purely because then i could buy the 160Gb version, other than that i love my 605 other than i wish that Archos would allow me to install 3rd party apps.

Yeah...I'm with you on this. The Archos has it's problems, but I just can't handle the thought of being so boxed in by Apple's interface, software and formats - and lack of USM support. It's so....boring.

This is the easiest debate in the technology universe--if there is a worse piece of software than iTunes, I still haven't seen it. Why should I have to use ANY piece of software to exchange files (and only one way on iPod!) when I've already learned how to use something called an Operating System that does a terrific job of transferring files between devices? iTunes is bloatware to the extreme and turns what should be a very simple procedure into a nightmare.

The icing on the cake is the iPod's lack of support for common file formats. Once you've experienced dragging and dropping just about anything you can think of onto an Archos, how could any rational person honestly say they're excited about converting pretty much every file into an arcane, Apple-specific format?

itunes works fine. Without it, DMR is a pain, and without DMR itunes wouldn't be able to have such a large library.

I did have to get an HTC mogul so that i can get on the net, and for bluetooth headphones, but nothing does it all so...

Again, it may work for Ipods, but it's still a PITA that you're locked into one way, and one way only. It's also a PITA that iTunes doesn't work with any other players.

BTW....don't you mean DRM (ie: Digital Rights Management)? Or did iTunes get that wrong too?

Yeah... oldest debate in the book. They could have charged minimally more and added the original three plugins at practically no increase in cost. Maybe $15 more. My feeling on this one is that's where archos Failed it's fans. Archos has the ability to charge so much for each because of the iPod touch's outrageous price. Is the 605 fully loaded a better deal than the touch? Yes. Is it a bargain with the plugins? No.

I'm very happy with mine because I mainly use it as a DVR and plan on using the TVPortation feature with a laptop and/or Cell phone Neither one is an option with touch. I use my iPod for Music.

Before I actually purchased the 605, I had a lot of reservations because I had read so much complaints about it here on this site. But now, it's been almost a year, and I have to say, it was the best electronics purchase I had made in years. Yeah, sure, web surfing sucks, the Content Portal has no content, the widgets are worthless, and Archos will continue to take your money for one reason or another long after your original purchase (i.e. Web Radio, GPS). BUT it does so many other things, and a lot of them, it does very well. I have no question that I'll be keeping my Archos. I'm just hoping that the 606 isn't going to be too much better because I would hate to be left too far behind

What would be the point of buttons that weren't exposed (so that you can press them)?

If you don't want to press them then use the "Lock" function.

What "lock" function?

That is a very important missing function as far as I know.

EDIT: Wouldn't it be funny if I'd locked my buttons and I thought my machine had died. That's not the case as rebooting gave me the Recovery (code 102) white screen of death.
