SDHC success is random

Post by beyoungjr »

I bought 16 Kingston 4GB Class 6 SDHC cards. We have 3 of the 405 units and 2 of the 605 units. The 605 units use all of the cards fine. One of the 405 units allows all 16 cards to work fine but the other 2 405's either freeze or simply do not recognize when 9 of the 16 cards are inserted. I emailed Kingston and they looked into the "Build Code" I gave them from the back of the cards. The identified that 9 of them were of one build type and 7 were of another build type. The onboard controller in the card is the main suspect.

The great news... Kingston is replacing the 9 that don't work with the identical build that I have on the remaining 7 cards. I FedEx'd the cards today and Kingston paid for the RMA. What else is to say but HOORAY!

Maybe I'm too happy too soon but it appears as though Kingston is "The Man"!

SDHC cards...

I originally ordered the cards from B&H Photo Video and I received two different build numbers. After identifying the problem with Kingston Tech Support, they are replacing 8 of the 16 cards with the matching build number for the ones that work fine in all of our devices.

Hi all,

just to give some hints to this issue:

All cards with capacities above 2GB are usually SDHC Cards. 2GB is the border because the official SD spec 1.1 defines capacities not higher than 2GB (SD 1.0 is only up to 1GB). There might still be some off-spec (!!!) cards on the market with higher capacity but brand cards (SAN disk, Transcent, whatsoever....) should follow the official specs. So when buying an 8GB card this must be a SDHC. And you folks are completly right: 405 is fully able to read SDHCs. I filled up my card till 20 MB freespace and it worked rock-solid stable in all cases (music, video, pics). This toy is great !!

I personally have a 16 GB Transcend class6 card (around 30 Ôé¼), which is perfectly working in my 405. Now I'm looking forward to a new 605 WiFi 4GB device which should arrive today and I expect the same: stable operation.

Cheers,
Scotty
