Yes you do need to buy the plug-in for browsing the internet. To convert dvd's to the archos you would need some type of dvd ripping software to rip them to your computer...or directly to your archos. These kinds of software usually let you choose between diffent formats the ripped dvd will be in, which would have to be .AVI or Divx and for audio Mp3. If you already have videos on your comp but there not in .AVI or Divx format, you can use a video converter software (link below ).For Music and photos you can copy and paste them directly onto the archos like an external hard drive (if you select it to act like an external hard drive and the pictures are in the right format).

You will find volumes of info and many different options. This will let you find what might be right for you. There is a sticky thread for Fair Use Wizard that is written for "Dummy form" it is great.
3. For photos and such, make sure your 605 is set to PC Harddrive mode and connect to your computer. Now just drag and drop.

If you are going on a long plane journey then you are going to have to invest in the battery dock to extend the playing time of the 605, especially if you plan to watch movies. It would also be wise to investigate the many threads on here about extending the battery life even further by using things like the Tekkeon (sp?) battery.

The other option for "ripping" DVDs (and I think it's kinda funny nobody thought to mention it before) is to buy either the DVR dock or the travel adapter. Either one will allow you to record directly on to the Archos, be it from a DVD player, a VCR, a cable box, or Tivo/DVR...
The only disadvantage will be that it will retain the integrity of the copy protection. If the material you record has copy protection, you'll still be able to watch the program, but ONLY on the 605's screen. If you record anything from your cable box or DVR, it probably won't have any sort of digital rights management, and you'll be able to watch it on the 605, transfer it to your computer, hook the 605 up to your tv and watch it that way, etc.
More expensive than of the plug-ins, but you don't have to deal with installing any software to your computer, or take up space on your computer (or time away from your computer , if it's not particularly powerful and slows up or freezes if you try to do anything while it's converting video), and it affords you the option of recording from other sources beyond just DVDs. Heck, the 605 is a DVR in and of itself. Set up the DVR dock, and let it record movies off of cable all night long.

One other thing, since the OP is probably unfamiliar with video formats and codecs:
.AVI is a container format that can contain any one of a number of different compression schemes within it (one of them being "DivX"). If you use any sort of conversion program to output DivX files for your 605, they'll have an .AVI filetype if you've done the conversion correctly.

I have worked out (i think) about the music and pictures its just the videos im gettin stuck with. So for me to copy a DVD on to my Archos, I need to download the software from that link you provided, chuck in the DVD and using the software I can convert it and put it on my Archos?

just buy this software it is a east. dvd fab. http://www.dvdfab.com/dvd-fab-platinum.htm insert dvd to computer pick profile of pvp then go to configure profile. and find archos 605. and hit the start key. dvd will get shrunk to archos 605. takes about hour and half on my computer. average 1.5 gigs file size. drag file into archos movies and fly away.
