there are loads of threads on this so do a search, you can copy the DVD files directly but you need to buy the add in from the Archos website. It plays AVI files straight out of the box - I use Clone DVD Mobile as it has a specific setting for the Archos 605 and rips DVD's perfectly for the size of the screen and shrinks them to a fraction of their original size. You will need Slysoft AnyDVD running at the same time to take out the copy protection.

As I said there are many threads on the forum re DVD

I'll second the choice of CloneDVD Mobile.

Very easy to use, a choice of output sizes and quality via a simple slider control, the option to encode individual episodes of a series separately and it's reasonably fast to encode too.

As RooOO says, if you also use AnyDVD then you can remove the copy protection "on the fly" and encode right from the DVD disc rather than having to copy it to the computers hard drive first (as with DVD Decryptor)

Great pieces of software.

I think you can also record directly from the DVD if you have the DVR station. Press play on the DVD, Press record on the Archos and Voila. you have an AVI of the movie although it takes however long the movie is to record. (which depending on your computer hardware can be faster) The down side is that you can't playback on the TV if you record this way, only on the Archos. I read somewhere that the Macrovision protection is subverted for Recording to the Archos itself and it will not play back copy protected video on a TV, only on the unit itself.

I found the sticky in this forum called "Converting via the FairUse Wizard" to be very helpful.

Good luck!
