Swan song?

Post by roylovelock »

I think it is safe to say the board is now on life support,
There has been no updates in some years, my last public post was in 2012.
It was fun back in the day, but I am wondering if it maybe time to put the old gal out of her long slow demise?

I have been a member on here since day one, back then we didn't have to log in to post only an update by Nick forced me to sign up (spam had become a big issue as it is today).

Im not sure now if we are good ambassadors to archos now, ive not used one of their products since the early death of my 101. I've since moved on and have galaxy note 4, kindle fire hdx, lenovo miix 2 8, and for my sins a mac book pro 2014 version.
I only have one machine with windows now and that is my miix2 which is more of a toy to play with - filling the hole archos used to fill, microsoft as shot their bolt with windows 8 - even 10 i don't think will return them to my house as a daily driver now.

The driving force behind the site who has always been there has sadly been very quiet of late. I know we all have lives but without the updates or interest of the owner the forum is sadly going to decline.

I think about all the people we have known over the years, the arguments, serious subjects, the tips and tricks, the laughs, the world wars (un of gadgets anyone remember that?) and the friends made - those were the salad days, and now just looking at the board is just all very sad. Even the advertisements on the top of the board are dead.

Should we look at closing the doors now or are we going to bring her back to life..... I suspect that she is past the point of no return and maybe we should look at archiving and closing?

Either way i will continue to try to moderate the site until the bitter end.

your thoughts?

I got amazing help here 6 months ago from julian67... I have also noticed a couple other helpful old timers chime in every other month or so. About once a month I try to help someone who generally doesn't respond as to whether it worked. Maybe twice a month I delete a spam with a simple delete-post and they don't come back.

So for me this forum is still marginally worth the trouble, and I see a few folks get good advice. Maybe new postings could be halted in a year or so, but still leave up the old info for another couple years? I learned so much just from reading this forum.

I wish I got a mac pro 15 rather than mac air 13. To get things done I still have to dig up my obsolete mac pro 17's from time to time, in spite of dead screen on one and a burst battery on the other.

I hate the kindle fire 6hd I got at xmas discount, and bought a refurb blu voyo unlocked phone instead (no plans for a sim card... I gather I can still dial emergency?). Then I have narrow but valuable uses for my old archos 7, arnova 10, and even archos 10 with a wonky touch screen.

im going to re address this now, ive just spent ages clearing 1000s of spam posts since 22 dec. I ended up pruning all the new accounts made after 22nd as all of them were spam.
Charbax what is our hit rate now?

im assuming most of the hits are now bots or spammers, the spammers are again on mass producing accounts, and somehow used our pm system as well (which drew my attention).
As we no longer support new devices how about closing to new members now to admin / mod approval only? this will stop the board being killed by these spammers at the very least.

Hey what's up? The forum is still up :)

I hope you're having a safe corona time.

Archos invented the whole market!

I'm thinking to add a bunch of categories about all sorts of tech, like Arm Laptops, Chromebooks, Smart Speakers, Teslas, Sunlight Readable Displays, 4K Cameras, etc etc. And make all the old Archos boards in somekind of Archos sub-category at the bottom. Then perhaps rename the URL too. How are you doing? Have you been an essential corona worker? hope your friends and family are safe.

Hi mate, yep we have both been key workers, in fact our work patterns haven’t changed at all. I don’t know if I told you but we also moved away from Basildon to Clacton-on-Sea.
I take it you have been stuck indoors due to the lockdown?
We will have to chat on the direct at some point. I’ve got to get ready to slog it out in the dusty tunnels below London.
Catch up soon

Oh nice do you live by the beach? Must be some commute if you have to get in and out of the London subway to the beach every day. Hope your car has autopilot :)

I paid some guy on fiverr to move the forum to a cheap little hosting company at $0.90 per month, prefer that then deleting the whole thing. There're so many posts, and I think it's historic, I really think Archos invented a lot of the industry everybody now takes for granted. All these smartphones Billons of people are addicted to, they're basically Archos PMA430's with built-in modem support, something we could do on an Archos by bluetooth tethering. The Qtopia apps were basically like the origins of Android which Apple copied doing iOS at that time.
