archos 80 g9 turbo vs "Google Nexus tablet"

Post by robertorocha »

Hi!
My archos got delayed again, and the store is not answering me.. again, i'm really getting fed up with it.. so, i want your opinion, should i still buy it or should i demand a refund and wait for the nexus tablet to buy it?! it's supposed to be an ASUS, with a 1.3 Quad-core processor, 1Gb Ram, 7in.. well still not much details but.. http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Google ... let_id7143
It can be packing android 5, or not.. nobody knows yet, bue knowing Google, it probably will..
Well, the question is, should i wait for the archos or wait for the Nexus Tablet (it's supposed to be annouced on the 27th of June.. And it will be a lot cheaper!)

I like my 80g9 well enough but if I were you I would wait for the Nexus tablet.

I have a 70IT and for most purposes prefer the 7" form factor. However, the 70IT is dog slow compared to the 80g9. The Nexus tab should smoke both of them.

I might be tempted to buy a Nexus and eBay my 80g9.

Thank you very much, but i've kind of figured it out, the device should be delivered around the 19th (next week), and i'm keeping it, however day 27 google should present the Nexus tablet and the details will come out.. The thing is that i have 30 days to return the tablet to the store i'm buying it from with no cost and no reason needed... So if i see that the nexus is way better, or i'm not happy with my archos, i'll return it and wait for the nexus..
Don't feel bad for the store, they're beeing some true bastards... awful costumer support and always postponing the release date, but only on the day that's supposed to be delivered...

7" 16:9 = too small, even with the increased res over the typical 600 res 7" tablets. I wish someone other than Samsung would make a 9" tablet. I'd actually like to see a 9" 4:3 tablet. Would give more room for normal surfing and document use and have a bigger screen for hd content than a typical 7". And it'd still be extremely easy to carry compared to 9.7" and 10.1" tablets.

Honestly, I'd put my archos Turbo against the Nexus all day. Faster processor, same ram, more storage capacity choices, and HDMI ..... the fact that the nexus doesn't have HDMI is a deal breaker for me! Ok, the screen and build quality is not the same, but its a larger screen....Ill take that! I mean, the nexus 7 is nice, but if you own the g9 Turbo, you're not really missing much....

I thought the G9 Turbo came with only 512MB of RAM? Also, I'm not sure if the CPU in the Turbo G9 is actually better or equivalent to the Tegra 3. From my readings of comparing the G9 Turbo to other tablets housing a Tegra 3, the G9 get's spanked pretty bad on graphic capabilities:

If it were me, I'd definitely go for the Nexus 7 over the G9 for the screen quality alone. It has the latest Android OS and no one knows if the Archos will support this upgrade on the G9. The Nexus was built from the ground up to work with Jellybean so logically it's performance should be spot on out of the box.

The big knock would be HDMI out (which I never use but others may) and an expandable SD card (which IS a issue if you want to house a good amount of movies or GPS maps).

Actullay, now that it has come out, i'll keep my archos everyday of the week, the only thing nexus has better its the processor, which its tegra and its quad core, and maybe, built quality and screen.. the os thing doesn't bother me a bit, archos will surelly have 4.1 in a few weeks up and running, its one of the best brands at updating their devices, just look at all the great samsung tabs which are stiil running honeycomb.. plus, archos has a bigger sceen, the 250gb (mine) huge disk (and some guy managed to switch it for a SSD), 3g possibility (nexus can't), hdmi out, full usb port (amazing really), and i just love the little stand on the back! The camera is more or less the same, nexus its cheaper, but not much (actually my archos 80 g9 250gb was at the same price due to discounts), the nexus isn't available yet to europe (except uk)

Don't get me wrong, nexus tablet is an amazing thing, its just brilliant and the processor at that price, there's just no competition, and if i think the archos is better its due to the use i give to it, i use it for work, i need a bud screen and a big storage!
Again google performed an amazing thing, and showed the world a device that could kick any ipad on the back of the head at a third of the price!
I love google, but this time i'm keeping my archos

I agree with all your sentiments but if prices are equivalent, I still think the Nexus is better simply from a future proofing standpoint. Moreover, it should be supported longer than the G9s as it is released almost Q3 2012.

Personally, I got my G9 80 Turbo for $132 OTD. At that price point, I think the Archos competes very well and I'd have a serious decision as to which one to choose. Sooner than later, archos will have to come up with an answer for the Nexus or risk having the Android market swallowed up by Google so theoretically, there should be an IPS, better performing tablet on its way from Archos soon. That doesn't bode well for our G9's as new products will always take priority over "last year's technology."

I had an 80G9 which was RMA'd recently and came back as a 80G9 turbo.

In the mean time I bought a Asus TF201 Transformer Prime. It's much big (and loads more expensive) but I love the larger screen area and better quality. I bought the 80 because I didn't want to carry around a larger one, but I have been blown away by how nice the Prime is.

I know that some people have had problems with them, but mine is just fine.

The Nexus is just 7 inches, and I think it would be way too small for me. But it depends on what you want to do and what you like I'm sure.

My son is using the 80G9 now.

cheers

I hope Archos will bring out the 9.7 inch soon enough...

I've had my Nexus 7 for three days and it is a nice tablet with some serious warts. As well as not having a HDMI or micro sd slot, it has disabled the ability to use flash drives using the USB OTG (the keyboards and mice work). It uses MTP protocol to talk to a PC which means you don't have access to the entire N7 file structure. In short, Google has the Nexus 7 buttoned down pretty tight.

My G9 is the 1.5GHz with 1GB RAM (model 502032) version and the N7out benchmarks it, but not by that much. The only place that I can see the extra speed being needed is in high powered games (I am going to try Tegra Pinball).

The N7 screen is really nice and the 8:5 aspect ratio is perfect for the 7 inch screen. The main purpose in buying the N7 was to be able to pull the sd card from a camera and view the photos via the USB OTG. Since I can't do that, it will probably only be used as an ereader until the guys at XDA come up with new ROMs for it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not going to get rid of my G9 anytime soon.

Only reason I got the G9 was the fact you can add extra memory, cant so that on the Nexus.
I now have 38GB which with all my discounts and Nectar points I paid £145 for.
7" would be more pocket size I suppose but you cant have it all :D

No contest, I have an ever problematic archos which does not impress at all and a nexus 7 which is lightning fast, has a way nicer screen and so far has not once crashed, stalled. My experience with archos is one long miserable continual story of bad customer service, bad equipment and faulty software.
Right now I foolishly tried to install the newest firmware and of course it will no longer boot up. Keeps hanging in the splash screen...

I wonder what are your comments today, after using more than six months, the Archos 80 Turbo 250GB.

On my side, I choose Nexus because of the quality. I cannot rely on a product that is defective every six months. Mostly, it takes more than six weeks to get it replaced. In my case, I sent my tablet twice during the last eight months. Five months of use and three months at Archos... Not a good ratio.
Also, Every time that I change the tablet, I have to reinstall my applications and my files. When you have a 250GB HDD, you have a lot of files.

In the end, My prefererence shifted to Nexus. Google provides good support on firmware updates. Imagine, no crash, no major bugs! Google even offers support on Jelly Beans. Can Archos do the same thing?

Anyway, my Nexus is now my main tablet for my everyday needs (GPS that works, reliable wifi connection and a tablet that won't break) and the Archos stays at home for entertainment until it brakes again.

Both my Archos 70 IT and 80 G9 were initially adequate hardware-wise, but were constantly crippled with poorly coded firmware updates.

My very underwhelming experience with these tablets has caused me to lose faith in Archos's technical abilities and their customer service (if you can call it service).

My Nexus 7 has performed flawlessly from the start.

All potential Archos customers, please beware!

The only reason I own 80 G9 is for the 4:3 8" screen. It's awesome for web and especially PDFs. But it is tragic that the Archos tablets typically have 512mb RAM. It really isn't adequate. I would like to see 2gb come along for better multitasking.

I had a 7" Nook Color until recently. The size is very pocketable. I would even like to see a 6" design perhaps. Sort of a super pocket web device. Phones are too small.
