Archos 80G9 Charging Solutions?

Post by ktime »

In having the highly noted charge issue with my Turbo, I've come across a massive amount of threads that simply state that other users are having the same problem.

However, I've yet to come across a thread/topic that actually list possible solutions. The most obvious is to send the tablet back for repair one might note. For the users that have done so, they frequently report the same issue occurring quite quickly after then receive the new tablet.

I've also noted the unrealistic users who are simply so fed up that they suggest contacting a lawyer to sue or going to Facebook to bring their reputation down. This company has proven that they could care less about their reputations as they have horrible customer service reps so it's not a realistic option. Additionally you will have people who say that it automatically comes on and starts charging when it feels like it but this only last a few days in most people's (including mines) experience.

I'm asking if anybody has found a realistic solution to fixing the charging issue and if not let's have knowledgeable people brainstorm likely solutions.

Thank You

I'm a new owner myself and looking into the charge problem less than 48 hours since receiving the device.
it seems to be discharging faster than it is charging, even in deep sleep mode.

I've found the following thread to be somewhat helpful: http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=84&t=64763
except for this issue, everything workss great. would be a shame if it turns out to be an expensive paperweight :(

*sigh*

I take my words back. I did everything recommended, left it "charging" this morning at 20%, came back 13 hours later to find it "charging" at 3%...

If you've upgraded to the 4.0.26 firmware... well, there are all kinds of weird bugs that Archos still needs to fix (one of which seems to be charging issues where it often drops to slow charge even with the Archos charger).

Here's a couple of things you can try:

First, before plugging in to charge turn the Wi-fi off, or better yet turn on the Airplane mode.

Then, when you plug in the charger, make sure it does not display a 'slow charge' notification. If it does, unplug, wait about 15 seconds and plug in again.

Also, the battery level indication may get out of sync with what the battery lever really is. So, you may have to turn the tablet off and start up fresh to get a correct battery level indication.

We've all been waiting for 2 months now for Archos release newer firmware that fixes (at lease some) of the bugs in the 4.0.26 firmware.

I can confirm what mls says about bad readings. I left my tablet on charge for 24 hours, and when I turned it on a few minutes ago I was told the battery was at 18℅. on rebooting, the power was reported to be 100℅. This problem never occured prior to 4.0.25.

The problem that I'm having is that I can't even turn on the tablet to turn airplane mode on.

It charges to the point where the light stops blinking but it won't power up anymore. It basically has become a paper weight as of now and Archos customer support has not been supportive in any way.

Sounds like you may be confused about how the green power light works. Normally, if the device is off when you plug in the charger, the light should start out as solid green and the device should start up itself. Then, after the battery if fully charged it will start flashing (slowly). However...

If you starts blinking (at a fast rate) right away when you plug in the charger and it does not start up by itself... that means the battery has already run do so far that it can not start up. In this situation, if you just leave it charging eventually the light will turn solid green (indicating that the battery is not at least charged enough to turn on, but not yet fully charged). Just leave it plugged until the light starts blinking again (slowly). That may take another 5 hours or more.

In other words, the green power light blinks in to totally different situations. In one case it is indicating the battery is far to low, but in the other case it is indicating the battery is fully charged. If you have not already done so, check out the link in the post further above.

Same here, left it this morning in airplane mode saying "0% (charging)" and came back some hours later to find the device will not turn on at all.
Also when I plug in the power ( it's an HDD model so power from wall outlet, not usb ) the green light turns on for a split second then goes off again.

...and I still have 3 monthly payments to make on this thing... Image

The only other suggestion I can offer is to unplug the charger (and all other devices). Press and hold the power button for at least 15 to 20 seconds (to make sure the device resets and totally turned off). Then plug in the charger to see what happens. If the battery is totally run down, it can take up to 12 hours to get fully charged.

And, the flaws in the Archos 4.0.26 firmware really are making things even more complicated because you can not really tell if it is charging at all sometimes. Other times it goes into slow charge mode (which could take days to ever charge a dead battery). And, even worse, other times it may be trying to continue to charge a battery that is already fully charged.

If nothing else works, you may just have to return the tablet for a replacement (or try to get your money back).
