Does this thing accept a bluetooth keyboard?

Post by nyexpat »

I've seen random complaints and posts saying that it does not.
Seems like it won't since it's not listed under accessories.
Also seems like a company would actually post what works and doesn't with its products.

To be fair to Archos, I don't think they ever claimed that BT keyboards would be handled: merely that there was some BT functionality. It would be nice, though, if they published which BT profiles they supported, they are rather reticent about this. Various people on the forum have implied that BT keyboards worked with the earlier versions of Android on the G9, but not with ICS. So the main use of BT on this platform appears to be streaming out music.

No company actually ever lists exactly which Bluetooth devices work with their products. It would be impossible for any company to actually test every other companies Bluetooth devices to see if the work simply because there are to many variations of the Bluetooth standards to start with, not to mention each device maker does things that are not exactly compliant with those standards.

If you look at the specs for an Archos G9 device it does say that it uses the "Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR" standard. If you get some other device that also says it uses that same standard then it most likely will work, but there is still no guarantee that it will simply because other device makers do non-standard things.

A good example of of a NON-standard BlueTooth device is the Wii Remote controller. Nintendo does all kinds of NON-standard things with that thing, and oddly yet you can actually even use one (if you can figure out how, because the newer ones don't work the same as the older original ones... by instally the WiiMote app from the Googl Play store... I use it for several games and with several game emulators).

To make matters even worse, what works or does not work with any Archos G9 tablet also tends to change with the various firmware upgrades. So, even is something did work, it may not later after a firmware upgrade. Sorry, Archos really screws things up a lot!

As such, you really have only 2 options. First, try a Google search for something like "Archos G9 bluetooth keyboard". There are many that do or can work if you do some searching about how to make them work, but the best option is to just try one yourself in a store to see if it works.

Hate to say it, but what works for some does not always work for others simply because Archos made too many hardware changes in their G9 devices to start with, and then messes things up even further with their (horribly bad) firmware upgrades.

I have Logitech BT keyboard that works quite well, but a cheap noname keyboard I own locks or crashes my A80.

I have successfully linked to this:
Keyboard + Leather Case Stand for Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

It's also a good fit for the archos. I made some holes on the left side for the mini sd, mini usb, hdmi, and headphone jack. (The speaker sounds ok through the case, and it's easy to control the volume control without cutting a hole for it.) Price was also pretty good too.
