Is My 4GB 80 G9 a turbo model

Post by kosenn »

I bought a used G9 80 4GB model. It has the OMAP4460 ES1.1 version. The board version is A80S-V5(T0). Boot version 5.05.000009-C0x08. I ran the Android system check and it showed Frequency range 350.0->1200.0MHz. I was wondering if this is one of the turbo models. There is no mention of it on the Box.

Hi. This is the "second" generation of the G9 model.

1. 1 GHz
2. 1.2 GHz same processor, overclocked, but labeled with "turbo"
3. 1.5 GHz the last one with a new processor, real speed -> this is the latest G9 model

Is there a way to tell what you have? I recently RMA'd a turbo G9 80 and got back a NIB G9 80. Nothing on the box says what speed it is.

I know that the overclocked models had a "turbo" label on box.
The better way is to detect the speed with the "developer" setting or with an "Android OS" app, where you can see the processor, RAM etc.

I own a 1.5 GHz HDD-model - there is only one model -> the 1.5 GHz model. ;)

Yes I found an app. My original was a turbo (1.2 ghz) and the one they sent me is a 1 ghz.

I sent a note to tech support Saturday referencing the RMA but have heard nothing yet.

As mentioned above, the Turbo models normally do have the word "Turbo" on the front of the device. However, there were a few odd ones...

If they ran out of cases with the work Turbo printed/engraved on them Archos sometimes just put a sticker on the front of a regular case (which could get easily removed somewhere along the line). Used or repaired devices may or may not have the word Turbo (or the Turbo sticker) on them depending on what cases/stickers where available at the time.

The first G9 (non-turbo) devices used a dual core OMAP-4430 1Ghz CPU and had only 512Meg of system RAM.

The early Turbo models also used a dual core OMAP-4430 CPU, but clocked at 1.2Ghz and still had only 512Meg system RAM.

When they changed to making only Turbo models, then they used a dual core OMAP-4460 clocked at either 1.2Ghz or 1.5Ghz and also increased the system RAM from 512Meg to 1Gig. However, early models shipped with Honeycomb (Android 3.x) which could only use 512Meg. To gain full use of the 1Gig required upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS, Android 4.x). That confused many people for a while LOL.

All of the above were available with either 8 or 16 Gig of Flash memory or with a 250Gig Hard Drive and only about 1.5Gig of Flash memory (trading the cost of Flash memory for the cost of a hard drive instead).

As you can see there is quite a mixed bunch of G9 devices out there. Unfortunately, many people purchased the 250Gig hard drive models thinking they could then install a bunch of apps... which is NOT true at all. In fact, the hard drive is strictly for video, music, photos, and other document or data files only! Since the 250Gig hard drive models have only about 1.5Gig of Flash memory the number of apps that can be installed is very few (since all apps install to the Flash memory).

Even though I know and understand all of the above... there is one thing that still baffles me, and that is the people the "claim" they bought an Archos G9 (usually from Staples) with only 4Gig of system RAM. As far as I know Archos never made any with that amount. I think those people are confusing things with the lower price/class Arnova branded devices (maybe Staples or someone else messed up the advertising, cases, or shipping boxes for those?).

Archos just change hardware too many times and kept selling things with the same model name. That's why there are all kinds of problems you will see posted about the 80 or 101 G9's, and why in any specific version of firmware certain things work for some and not for others.

That's also why when Archos released firmware 4.0.24 it totally bricked a bunch of certain 101 G9 devices.

When they change hardware they really should also change the model number also (idiots)! Makes no sense to have an OMAP-4430 1.2Ghz "Turbo", and then also have OMAP-4460 1.2Ghz and 1.5Ghz "Turbo" models... and even less sense have some with only 512Meg and others with 1Gig of system RAM. That just confused everybody (idiots)!

As mentioned above (in an overly long post) I have absolutely no idea what you have there because as far as I know Archos never made any 4GB G9 devices, and definitely not that low with an OMAP-4460 CPU.

Are you sure is does not say Arnova on the front instead of Archos? Basically, the Arnova brand is lower cost versions of the Archos products... usually with less memory and lacking some features (like maybe GPS).

If it is an Arnova brand, then you are in completely the wrong forum here. You would have to check the Arnova website for any information or to find any forums for Arnova devices.

Now, if you really want to see some confusion, try to figure out which version of an Archos 70b people have! There's a 70b e-book reader model, and G8 model with Android 2.x, and then they now sell what they "claim" as being a G9 model with Android 3.x. Just loads of fun trying to figure things out with those because people keep posting things in the wrong forum section (because the think there was only one Archos 70b model... stupid idiots at Archos using the same model number for multiple hardware configurations again).

I have the original box. It shows Archos 80 G9 4GB dual core processor. This was one of the Staples models. What I found out later was the system uses about 3GB and leaves almost 4 GB for the user. So the total is almost 7GB. I ran a system check and it is definately the 1.2GHz, omap4460 and turbo is not printed on the box or the tablet. I also have the 101 G9 16GB tab. It is the 1.2 GHz model with omap4430. It has turbo printed on the case.

@mls, I believe that for a brief period of time Archos made a special for Staples with only 4GB of flash - seehttp://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.p ... 89#p392987. Because it had less flash, it could be offered at a lower price point. However, I suspect that if someone had troubles with their Staples special after the initial batch had been sold, they might find that when they sent it in for repair they got a different one back, with more RAM and perhaps a different processor.
