On my 101 G9 1.5Ghz 250GB model I have problems transferring files from my Windows PC to the G9 internal harddisk.
When I connect it via the MTP (mass transfer protocol) to the PC, a explorer-type windows opens representing the G9's harddisk to which I can copy files. However, when I select multiple large (2-4GB) files, copying starts, but the G9 starts to reset itself (which of course causes the MTP connection to be detected lost by Windows). It resets more often the hotter it gets (and at the left side it really gets hot after copying data for a while), and the more I use the G9 while copying. Fortunately, MTP seems to be able to continue the transfer from where it failed last due to the reset. Selecting 1 by 1 large file and copying while not touching the G9 causes the least problems.
So, I thought to try the MSD protocol instead. I switched off the G9 and pressed the power button while holding the volume up button. The G9 booted as expected into the recovery menu, and Windows showed the G9's harddisk as a mass storage device. Unfortunately it did not assign a drive letter, nor did the Disk Management find a partition. Ok, though I have the Ext2fsd driver installed and have read it supports Ext2/Ext3 and partly Ext4, I thought I would try Linux instead so I booted my PC from the Parted Magic CD. The syslog showed the G9 as a MSD too (I'm a Linux novice, but I'm quite sure from the messages that Linux detected the G9's harddisk as /dev/sdb). Unfortunately again, I could not mount the G9's harddisk, as fdisk wasn't able to show any partition.
So, I would appreciate any ideas for my 2 problems:
1) Why does the G9 reset quite frequently during MTP transfers.
2) Why does the G9's harddisk when using the MSD protocol not show a partition/volume? I think I have read that the SD-card models do show their SD-card as a MSD device, does my G9 not show anything because it has no SD-Card but an harddisk?

Same problem here on Archos G9 80 TURBO 250 GB, it gets extremly hot near connection ports and resets often, too often...
FIX for file transfer problems
This seems to be a common and very annoying problem, however I have a 'fix'
The problem is definitely heat related, depending on the Archos model. I own an A70 250gb, A80G9 250gb and an A101G9 250gb. I have never had any problem transferring a lot of data to the A70. A few intermittent problems on the A80, but lots of problems with my A101. Not ALL A101's suffer from this. Out of 3 I have tested, one has no problem, the other two constantly abort large file transfers and reset themselves. The 'fix' will work on the A80 too if needed.
I have spent a lot of time trying to solve the issue, and my final conclusion is that it is due to poor design re. air circulation. When files are being transferred, especially when the A101 is connected to the power plug, the bottom left hand corner gets so hot, that the Archos just gives up and resets itself. Not sure if it is a built in safety mechanism that triggers it, but the annoying result is that transferring large files can be a nightmare.
OK, the 'fix'.
All that is needed is a bag of something frozen from the freezer. An unopened bag of peas for example. Just make sure the back of the bottom left hand corner of the Archos is resting against the cold bag. Obviously it MUST be an unopened bag, to ensure no water gets out as the bag warms up. Just make sure you use a sealed bag and keep it away from the sockets.
This is sufficient to keep the Archos cool enough.
I know, in this modern age such a fix seems out of place, but the important thing is that it works. This is not a wind-up. It really works.
I transferred 100 gig of data yesterday, in one copy and paste operation with no reset problem at all. Prior to that I lost count of the failed attempts, and thought I was going to have to resort to copying just one file at a time.
You only need to do this for very large data transfers. Under 'normal' usage the bottom left corner of the Archos can get quite warm if the hard disk is being accessed a lot, but not enough to cause it to shut down.
Is there a 'flaw'? Not from the file copying point of view, just make sure you get the partly defrosted bag of peas back into the freezer before your wife finds out LOL.
I love the Archos tablets, especially the G9 series. I have found very few things I could or would moan about, and lots of things that are just great.

I realise there are going to be a few 'witty' people out there who will find it hard to resist posting something nasty about the 'fix'. Hopefully they may just be able to refrain from doing so.

I have the same problems with overheating with my Archos 101 G9 250gb hdd.
But using a frozen bag is not the best option.
Better is buying a right size notebook-cooler for this.
I use one for big data downloads, and the (over)heat(ing) is gone.
No resetting anymore.
But you have to take it out of a used cover every time you download big files.
And I'am still not sure it's the hdd or the battery (or both) that creates this heat.
