screen wake dark gray screen also happens on boot

Hopefully this will be my last plea for advice!
Very frequently When I wake the device (even seconds later or longer) with the power button the entire screen is dark gray/ black with the odd lighter line on it. Its as though it struggles to wake the screen up. I press it again to turn it off then on again it seems (most of the time though not always) fix the problem.
It also doors this on a cold boot or restart. But here it's easier to see add the lighter gray section seems to move in a band across which i assume is when the archos logo lights up across to show it's booting.
So is this normal behavior? is it a problem? should i return? Or is it just an ICS issue that will hopefully be fixed?
