My old 70 IT never once asked me to buy the plug in pack for AC3 sound. However my increasingly dissappointing 70b 250gb is refusing to play the same vids until I do so. I am very reluctant to buy it at all.
Any way round this? I have emailed Archos UK to express my annoyance.

Then you probably never updated it. There were a handful of firmware revisions where the AC3 pack was "free" but it was always patched back out.
