Archos 70 cannot handle 200GB of music

Post by toomanymp3 »

Hello all....

I bought an Archos 70 250 GB a few weeks back strictly as a large MP3 player. I cannot get this thing to work as expected.

During setup I upgraded the firmware. I proceeded to load 200GB of MP3 files onto the device, and was unable to get it to recognize or find more than 300 songs through the delivered player, or any other player app I tried. I can see all the music and play them through the file system, but no player apps seems to be able to handle that much music.

I tried multiple resets back to original, deleting all data, and also rebuilding the database multiple times.

Each of these attempts took hours and overnight processing. I finally gave up and am expecting to return the device. Has anybody experienced this issue and found a solution? Are there any tricks to get the device and apps to work properly with large databases? I've tried half a dozen devices over the last year in an attempt to avoid going back to the ipod, but it seems I can't find a product that will handle 50,000 songs, and still be usable. Any thoughts?

This is not a fault with your device, it is a shortcoming of the android os itself - there is a maximum number of tracks that the os can index, it is pretty high, but 200gb - who needs that many tracks with them all the time !.furthermore, there are hundreds of previous posts about this issue going back a couple of years - a quick search would have helped you.

Thanks

Yeah, I figured it was android, as I tried some other android devices as well. However, there did seem to be some processor speed issues I noticed. Of course that could be OS related too. I tried various searches for about 30 minutes, but was unable to fine tune the results enough to identify this specific issue.

I tried player on another android device, (a phone) and no luck there either. I realize the Archos is totally different than a phone, but there seems to be significant maturity issues with the android OS. Device operations have not been fully vetted as yet.

Finally, I've seen the comment on "Who needs that much, that many", all over the internet. I can appreciate the inability to understand the need for having so many mp3's on one device, so here's my answer to those of you who do NOT have the need: Imagine if you will, that you are in the desert for 2 weeks straight at an Baja 1,000 event, or on the ocean for 1 month, or hiking the wilderness for weeks on end, with no access to civilization, only a solar charger. Or you are in Tibet, or Vietnam for 2 months. In some cases you are playing music for 3 days straight. At that point, even playlists become irrelevant. I and others with me want a selection of anything and everything over an extended period of time, including audio books. Passing judgment on someone else's desires, or need, based on your life experience is generally based on faulty assumptions, and leads to misplaced focus and attention. Life is far more diverse than any of us can imagine.

That's one heckova battery. Two weeks straight in the desert? Wow.

You're right. I never could have imagined that.

Solar Charger..... :o) Gotta have it. Or three just in case.

So I'm screwed, right. No way the Archos/Android is up to the task at this point, is there?

Man I hate to go back to the iPod, or swapping SD cards.....

I've read some of the them.... It sounded to me like there is a 20,000 file index problem with the OS, and an App cannot solve the problem. Is that incorrect?

So I'm just checking back to see if anyone has heard of a work around for the ARCHOS/Andriod indexing problem. So far I've nto heard of one that will work with 10's of thousands of MP3 files. I had to return the Archos 70 since it was not able to handle my needs.

I'm still not heading back to the ipod yet. I'm trying to get Archos to let me play with their hardware risk-free for several months to try and figure it out. It's gonna take a long time, since I only have a few hours a week I can spend on the issue.
