Should I sell my Archos 70 and get this one?

Post by eagle1 »

Hello everyone.

Just wondering what's on the subject! :?

Not sure if I should sell my Archos 70 8GB through eBay or locally and get one of the new 8 inchers with 250GB HD.
I know that the hardware was revised, and that of course it has an updated Android OS version but... how about media playing?

Is it consistent enough?
Does it play anything like the previous gen players?
Does it "hang" while playing videos like the Archos 7 did?
(I don't use the 70 much but maybe this new one can replace my Archos 7 which has been great these past few years and I use it EVERY day at work as it has enough space to store my music collection and a couple of movies!!)

As an owner of a 605 with dock, an Archos 7 160gb, etc. I've always liked Archos for their cheaper but totally functional players. Still, don't know if I should jump in for this new one.

Thanks.

P.S. Are there any other problems apart from the "screen-bubble" issue?

Well... no replies yet... Hmmmm...
I take it not many people have bought these?!?

Anyway, I just listed my Archos 70 on eBay.
Still not sure if I'll get the 250GB one later on...

Thanks.

I don't think that a lack of reply can be read as their not being many buyers. I suspect that for a significant proportion of buyers this may be their first archos purchase, and so cannot compare it with your 70. Also, I don't think many have got their hands on the hard disk version!

Hey butterflygirl!

Nice to know!
Have you tested media playing, especially MP3s with a big media library?
Also, does your unit have the "screen ripple" behaviour?

I listed my Archos 70 so... I'll say goodbye soon if it sells! ;-)

I've played some video, and with the exception of some freezes needing a reboot, I've been generally happy with that. I haven't tried music yet and don't have a huge .mp3 collection.

My unit does have the ripple effect if I press too hard on the back of the unit behind the 3g port. It is generally two spots about the size of a pencil eraser and disappears within 2 sec. It has not had any adverse effect on my daily usage of the unit.

I believe this is the right move, as the device can still hold some value right now in the used market. In fact I'm thinking of doing the same.

When time passes and honeycomb / ICS tablets are more common and cheaper, then the Archos G8 prices will fall down even more and it will get harder to sell them.

I agree with you. Mine which has the Cinema plugin, 2 cases and 2 screen protectors and was in excellent condition only sold for $125.00. (And it is still on firmware 2.1.08 which many people think is the most stable firmware)

Personally I'm planning to sell my iPad and buy a 80 g9 250. I'm waiting for the tab to come out, and be available on amazon, and m going to sell the iPad after I get my new Archos. When I bought the iPad I was going to get a 101, but got tired of waiting for them to be I stock. So I think these are worth it, but don't think they will hold their resale value as well as my iPad has.

The resale value for apple products is insane. I recently sold a couple of 4th Gen nanos and couldn't believe how much they sold for.

I'll definitely get the hard disk version but I guess it will depend on your usage... I'm pretty sure that if I buy this tablet, I'll use it as my main media player also so...

BTW, sold my Archos 70!!!
(and already spend it in new cellphones -- yes plural... want to try an Android set and a Windows one ;-))

Thanks.

I recently moved from a 70 Internet Tablet I was still able to RMA thru TigerDirect.com and got the 80G9. Yes, I got the 8GB non HDD model, but this thing is sweet. With the updates, now it's at Honeycomb 3.2 and runs Netflix, Skype and so on. The media capabilities, just like most all Archos is top-notch! I don't really regret not getting the Hard Disc Drive version, I have a 32 GB MicroSD card and a 32 GB Thumbdrive. If I really want much room, I have two USB external hdd's so I could hook up one to a USB port.

I also have an Acer Iconia A500 that I really love. Two things it has that the G9 doesn't, but is livable is 1. No rear camera. How few pennies would this add? Oh well. 2. Portrait (not Widescreen) mode only. This isn't bad and all that, but widescreen is the current standard (except for Apple!) and does this cost extra money? Well, I guess it makes it more of a square shape, for what that's worth. I would prefer widescreen, but this is okay. So this G9 does quite well compared to an industry leader, the Acer Iconia A500.

I really do love both of my tablets. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Archos really has a great product with the 80G9 and for the life of me, I don't see why it's not on displays at places like Wal-Mart, Target and the like. Sales would go through the roof!

Yes, sell any previous generation Archos and get this, flash or hard disk drive, your choice. You'll be extremely happy! Yes I get slight bubbles on the screen, but that's only because it's thin there and you are pushing on the back of the screen. Maybe the next ones will have a harder plastic or some type of metal. Still worth it!!!
