yeah, I engaged overdrive some while back ;) had a few wierd things happen since upgrading, spontanous reboot and the 'Updating Photo thumbnails' stuck at 0% which I think I've seen before mentioned, and the icons for stuff moved to external storage or whatever haven't come back. Anyway it seems more or less ok.

Reproduce:
- Configure bluetooth tethering
- Set power management settings to enable "deep sleep"
- Use the pushbutton widget to enable bluetooth, then to turn on tether to a phone
...
This is where your problem lies. Officially Android says that the state of bluetooth cannot be changed except via settings. Any app (or widget) that changes the bluetooth state directly is using some hack because there is no API in the android toolbox to do so. You can tell if a hack is being used if you don't get a message along the lines of ' appname has requested bluetooth to turn on / turn off / be discoverable'

Try redoing your steps but for this step modify bluetooth by manually going to the settings and changing it there instead of using the widget you're using now. That should keep things working. I'd guess whatever hack the widget uses to do its magic breaks things just enough that tethering fails but doesn't break things so badly that general bluetooth operations like pairing to headphones works so that simple testing by the app developer missed it.
Well, my first try using the menus corrupted Launcher entirely. The 4 buttons moved to the bottom of the screen and became unusable. And other menu apps didn't work. I had to reboot the Archos to do anything again.

But to be clear, this widget is installed with Archos stock firmware. And the "tether" capability it enables/disables is Archos-only (no other manufacturer has created Android DUN tether yet). So it IS an Archos firmware bug in my view.

Wow! 2.4.19 is amazingly fast on my Archos 70 8 gb. The icons on the home screen pop up instantaneously and the home screen pages just fly by. The multimedia library update is really zippy, no more crawling along forever, and my 2000 photos show up in the Gallery speedily--which used to take many minutes of waiting.

I upgraded from within Settings, without any reformatting or suchlike, and it all went very smoothly.

I updated from 2.1.8, which worked beautifully for me, but this is so much faster. The first two photo screen rotates I did with the new firmware balked and at first I thought it wouldn't rotate. The third rotated instantly and screen rotates have been like lightning ever since.

It does seem to use more battery, but it is a bit early to tell. I keep wifi turned off at night as I always have, so it can't use up battery searching. I have no games, so I do not know about graphics juddering. Videos work beautifully so far.

Archos, thank you so much for this beautiful new firmware. And I am incredibly grateful to the Archosfans for steering me clear of the intervening downgrades. I have been reading this firmware update forum and it made me decide to take the plunge on 2.4.19.

I have had my Archos 70 for seven months and have had no problems of any kind so far, and I owe it all to archosfans. I love this tablet.

Thanks for that positive review, ruellia.

I am very much on the fence about upgrading from 2.1.8. Like you stated, it has been fine for me, and I am happy that I skipped some of the more problematic releases.

I've been fooling around with Gingerbread ROMs on my HTC Thunderbolt phone, so my Archos 70 hasn't seen much love recently.

Thanks to 2.4.19 I think my archos 70 (250HD) is running better than ever.
Have previously upgraded by sideloading firmware updates, but used the OTA version this time and it was a painless experience.

Thanks to all the guys who gave this a go first and convinced me to upgrade.
I haven't had any real issues other than the occasional white screen with the earlier fw, but 2.4.19 seems to have added a little extra zip to proceedings.

So, we can conclude that only angry birds are affected in the bad way?
Did I miss something?
Everything else is running ok?

Angry Birds was not affected on my system. I have had no negative effects from this FW. Only positive ones. :D
I think all of my issues have been resolved that were introduced in the 2.3.xx series

As much as I want to update I just hate reinstalling my apps or losing market. I already asked. Is there a better and painless way of updating and not losing anything?

I sideload my updates and I did not have to reinstall my apps either.

+1. I had no problems with the update that required reinstalling any apps.

I have 70 apps but I experienced no problem in updating the firmware from within settings-- I did not sideload, or reformatt or reinstall anything.

I have a chess app that is just called "Chess" and it still works perfectly. (Someone said their chess app had stopped working with 2.4.19 )

It has reverted to the wretched "Update photo thumnails" at a crawl. The first time I did it after the update, it did it very fast. Now it is back to its bad old ways. Everything else is much faster, and battery usage seems to be about the same as it was before.

I have hardware revision 6.

With Archos it is a very scary moment when you upgrade, but so far I have had no problems and I am really enjjoying the speed and snappiness.

That's great news! :D I assume that means you still had market access too? I used gappsinstaller to do this so I won't have to do this again as I think that deletes apps. I'm going to do it as soon as its confirmed.

Bug: Password protected SMB shares are no longer working. After I enter the username and password in the Files application, nothing happens except that the CPU load goes up and stays up. The server is running Samba 3.5.10. The same setup was working with firmware 2.1.8. I did not try any of the intervening firmware versions.

Bug: the Video application crashes when I try to use the 'select subtitles' feature.
