So I just recently purchased this device two days ago.
Already I've run into issues. First the device won't charge past 96% via the usb. Second, the battery on the device is described as having 7 hours video. Well I've played 2 hours of video on it, and it dropped from 96% to 14%.
Lastly I was playing a video and about 1 hour in, it froze before saying something about the format not being supported. From that I couldn't see any files in the video storage area and it would not connect to any computer via usb. Resetting the device fixed this, and when I replayed the same video that crashed an hour in, it played past that part without issue.
Are these normal issues to have with a device just purchased? I'm considering returning the product to the retailer as it doesn't seem to work as advertised, and seems like it has bugs that are going to annoy me.
I'm only really using the device for video playback, other applications don't really appeal to me, I have an iphone if I want to surf the net or use apps.
Edit: I updated to the latest firmware from the start.

heh i cant even get 7 hrs of audio
Re: Issues with just purchased Archos 48 Tablet
But 2 and 1/2 hours surely is ridiculous when they advertise 7 hours. 5 or 6 hours fine, but 2 1/2 to 3?gonemad wrote:heh i cant even get 7 hrs of audio
Re: Issues with just purchased Archos 48 Tablet
Depends on video format to a degree - 720p will tax the device more than standard def.
Also - you need to get a few charge/discharge cycles in before seeing full battery life. And what about brightness setting? try turning this down to something still brearable but dimmer for better battery life. Try charging with a higher capacity wall charger (if using only usb via pc).
You might have been unlucky with the freeze. I'm sure all of us have experienced this occassionally but as long as it's occassionally it really shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Issues with just purchased Archos 48 Tablet
I have just discharged the battery till it basically shut down.
Now I'm trying to charge it via usb, it's been in for an hour and won't go past 4%?? This thing really does have some issues. As for wall charger, this thing didn't come with one. So I have to buy a usb adaptor? Come on, if one isn't provided then the least that should be expected is for it to be able to correctly charge when plugged into a computer.
I really am close to returning this thing. It just seems to be one thing after another. I don't need it to be anything more than what was advertised and to just work. I was hoping for an upgrade from my 80gb Cowon A3, but it seems that device is much more stable than this one.

Re: Issues with just purchased Archos 48 Tablet
Don't let the Archos's battery drop below 5%.
There is a stupid bug that won't let the battery charge beyond 5% when the battery is below 5%. You must plug in the USB, then turn the Archos completely off, then it'll charge normally. You can turn it back on in 10 minutes after the battery has been charged to above 5%.
You'll never get 7 hours of video. That's only attainable with an ultra low resolution video with no sound and minimum brightness on a SSD unit. Realistically you should expect 4 hours for SD videos and 2 hours for 720p videos on a hard drive unit on max brightness.

Dundalis did you return your Archos 48 or still have it?
I'm having a similar problem I can't get mine charging past 97% and the charge times seem very high right now.
I purchased mine around the same time as you, maybe even from the same shop?
Have a read at my post and see if any of it is familiar for you:

Re: Issues with just purchased Archos 48 Tablet
I have the same battery life problem as well. I just received the unit last week brand new. I did a few troubleshooting steps. I upgraded the firmware, I cleared the temporary files and system cache and updated my media library. It went to a 100% a couple of days ago and stayed there as long as I have had my battery dock connected to it. But now again my Archos 48 only charges to 95% before then to 89% then to 95% When will Archos make an mp3 player that I dont have to constantly bug tech support and ask for an RMA?
