Omap 4460 hd video capabilities

Post by gaetanolip »

Hi,

i hope gen9 will be able to decode hd videos, especially the h264 level 4.1 high profile ones, those kind o videos are the majority all over tha web. but........
From this spec http://www.archos.com/products/gen9/spe ... us&lang=en , gen 9 can only handle h264 hd high profile videos up to level '3.1',
but from this one http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartphon ... glish).pdf ,
playbook , which has less power both in gpu and cpu, can handle h264 hd high profile videos up to level '4.2 '.
There is something wrong.....without h264 high profile level 4.1 support ( just like Tegra 2) the tabletS are worthless (concerning watching hd videos)

not having any HD content, how much difference can you see between 720p and 1080p on a small screen? and how close do you have to be to the screen to see the difference if you can? I'm curious.

The goal is to connect your device to the tv using hdmi capabilities.

Archos claimed video specs have always been either a little conservative or just plain vague.

not having any HD content, how much difference can you see between 720p and 1080p on a small screen? and how close do you have to be to the screen to see the difference if you can? I'm curious.

I'm interested in this because i have a huge video library (as no doubt expected from people that are going for Archos) and converting all of them is impractical. I have 8 terabytes of anime and i'd like to just pick a series and watch any of them without needing to leave the PC running overnight transcoding just so i can watch them. With the Archos, even if you're in a rush in the morning, you can just copy the files while you brush your teeth. I've been able to do that with all of my anime below 720p and most of my 720p library. 1080p will mean i can now download 1080p subs and all the 720p.

This kind of convenience is why the iPad isn't anywhere in my radar. They keep touting it as a media consumption device, but that's kinda moot when you need to jump through hoops just to get your media on it in the first place. When i got my iPod3rdGen, i really did leave my PC overnight converting videos and it got old really fast, to the point that i just gave up and stopped uploading new videos into it. When the iPod4thGen came out last year, i got it too, to thinking it can finally play my MKV's. No such luck. VLC and oPlayer are unplayable. I've also seen oPlayer demoed on iPad 2, 1080p MKV is unplayable. It does play 1080p, but i'll need to convert my 1080p to the iOS 1080p spec, which is stupid. Why advertise a 720p device as capable of playing 1080p, when it can't even run any of the 1080p in your library?

I am with you on this train of thought. I've never seen any 1080p vids that were anything under high profile level 4.1....

the real key is if it could support 4.1 or better 5.11 it would stream blu-ray with re-encoding. If it can't then honestly you're better re-encoding to 720p to match the native display. What's quoted now are the same specs as most of the tegra 2s

The thing that seems to keep getting missed with that point is that I've been sending requests to transformer owners and none of them have been able to play my 720p's.

In terms of playback, the tegra 2s is only on par with the ipad 2. Neither can play what's actually in your media library.

I just wanna be able to play Tiger and Bunny anime as subbed by Commie or [C] - Money of Soul and Possible of Control as subbed by GG. Those are crazily encoded anime that cripple my Archos 70IT.

Just connecting the dots, can't say for sure, obviously:
From the OMAP4 product page http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/w ... ateId=6123 there is a link to the "Product Bulletin" in PDF format, which states that:
IVA 3 delivers up to 1080p at 30-frames per
second (fps) encode/decode and the broadest
support for multimedia codecs available today,
including, but not limited to:
- H.264 HP
If you check the wikipedia page for H.264, you will see that:
High Profile (HiP) (is) The primary profile for broadcast and disc storage applications... (like) ...the Blu-ray Disc storage format.
So... if I would bet, I'd say: yes, it should support 1080p30 h.264

Cheers!

I think that text is for IVA3 on OMAP4430, now on OMAP4460 it can playback 1080p at 60fps, that could mean 1080p 3D, or even it can do 1080p 30fps video-conferencing on your HDTV, given that a 1080p USB webcam can in theory work.

No current android tab can play what's in my library as they are all h.264 L4.1/5.1 1080p. Nor I doubt will the gen9 at leaat based on specs posted

On the 720p point my transformer plays anything my a101 does. I have converted several brays to 720p h.264 L4.1 at around 5mbps. They stream from my server fine. Gramted this was not the case before the 3.1 update. Current archos still has better hdmi playback, but the last update improvedit a lot.

Links sent. They're all 720p videos that run on the Archos 101. You don't have to download the entire series, just try running the first episodes on your transformer.

Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile
Wildlife.wmv
It's the one that came with your Windows 7.

4.1 9refs
CLANNAD-Blu-ray BOX Eizou Tokuten - NCED BD H264 720p 24fps DTS-HDMA 5.1ch FLAC 5.1ch

4.0 8refs
[HorribleSubs] Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - 01 [720p].mkv

4.0 9refs
[Underwater] Shinryaku! Ika Musume - 01 [720p][7E3E0761].mkv

4.1 9refs
B_Gata_H_Kei_01_[BD_720p][AtsA][1E3258F5].mkv

They all run even tho the Gen 8 is only supposed to support 3.1. That's why i half expecting the same thing to happen to the Gen9. Will it really be locked into 3.1 or will it still be able to support 4.1 to a limited extent as well?

When the Gen9 demo units come out, i'm gonna be giving whoever has it some 1080p links as well.

I will forever call that the "Nabiki" hair style. Anyway, Charbax better have the first unit so we can send video requests to settle this.

BTW, my "to watch" folder is 817GB. That's just a fraction of my archive, which i estimate to be around 7-10TB.

If you want the best ever video file testing, I need help, send me a batch of the worlds best HD video test files, not too many, not too few, and most importantly, it has to be representative of what is most popular right now on thepiratebay, isohunt all those BitTorrent sites. I don't think only testing anime is representative of what 100% of Archos users want to do, and I don't think testing home encodes is the best way. The best way would be to split some small compact samples from original very popular downloaded 1080p and 720p all high profile MKV downloaded on the worlds most popular bittorrents. Few complicated animes can be tested too, but I'd like to see samples from the worlds currently most downloaded 1080p MKV files. Then I can try to put all those on my MicroSD and see if I am allowed to test them as soon as I get an opportunity.

I suggest volunteers create a batch download for example all in a rar and upload that to Google Docs or some other fast online storage and provide the link here, let others also judge if those samples seem to be well representative, dumping the file stats in the thread as well so everyone can see as much of the encode specs as possible.

No argument there. These fansubbers are the furthest from following any standard. The fact that the archos can play all those different combinations of video/audio codecs is what blew me away.

You want the best? How about Advent Children. There's an 11Gig 16ref video i can link you to. Can't remember the profile, but it's gotta be insane.
