I second that (wanting some confirmation). If true it confirms what a lot of us have been seeking since Generation 8 (1gb worth of ram).

Sounds good. Now I'll have to decide if I need an upgrade.

I also noticed on Archos that the have a gen 9 product page, but it don't give any detailed information as did the write up at PDAdb.net did. I would also like a price range as the new Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tab is at $499 for wifi only.

This may be one of the steps to keep cost down, but still better than the too low 256mb in the Gen 8 ;)

The answer is easy.
The reason is : the CPU used.

Look at the Spec. sheet of the CPU.
You can understand two things :
- Why DDR2
- Why PowerVR SGX SGX540 GPU core (2007) and not PowerVR SGX SGX543 GPU core (2011)
Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 RISC Multi-core microprocessor with embedded DSP :

dual ARM Cortex-A9 Harvard Superscalar processor core, LPDDR2 memory interface, embedded image signal processor (20MP camera support, 12MP stereo 3D camera support), 2D/3D graphics acceleration (IVA 3), 300MHz PowerVR SGX SGX540 GPU core (OpenGL ES v2.0, OpenGL ES v1.1, OpenVG v1.1, EGL v1.3), SmartReflex 2 technologies, M-shield mobile security, ARM TrustZone, HDMI output, Composite and S-video TV output, XGA/WXGA 16M-color (24-bit definition) display support, High Speed USB 2.0 On-The-Go support, 1080p 30fps video encode/decode, 1080p stereoscopic 3D video encode/decode, TWL6040 power management.

According to Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/23/arch ... -5ghz-cpu/ :
The duo is scheduled to go on sale at the end of September (you know, just a month or two before Ice Cream Sandwich makes Honeycomb look like old hat), with the 80 G9 going for $279 and the 101 G9 for $349.

Do the specs of the device determine upgrade eligibility? I'm wondering because Archos never updates their devices to new versions of Android. I mean I feel like Generation 8 is still new enough to be able to support Honeycomb update and while the G9's should be powerful enough to get an Ice Cream Sandwhich update. Why has Archos back away from updates? Are there certain hardware requirements that the tablets lack?

Gen 8 can't actually be upgraded. The minimum for Honeycomb is 512mb of RAM, and Gen 8 has 256mb of RAM.

Henry Crohas has explained that they had to modify the low levels of Android in order to develop a tablet with hard drive because Android has never been made for hard drive. They have added a 4 Gb memory between the hard drive and Android and have modifed Android to use this memory instead of the hard drive. HC has explain that they have been working on these kinds of change for 3 years.

What I think : when you see the amount of work to implement Honeycomb, don't dream of a future upgrade.

This is what worries me, since the more modified the OS is, the harder it is to upgrade. We all know the drill: Archos will support this for a few months, until it's time for the next round of products. For community support to be viable, the more plain-jane the platform, the better.

Gee.. 98% of the next gen tablets are coming with 32GB of onboard memory at nearly the same prices as the Archos gen9. This does not bode well for Archos, as they might end up losing market share this time around. BTW, no mention of a 5" archos gen9 device?

16gb is too low density for Android 3.0 which will be able to do so much more.

what about, oh I dunno, the micro-sd card slot? the 250 GB HD? and the fact that there is no 10" HC tablet that is as low in price as the 101 G9?
