GrooveIP -- Make & Receive Free Calls With Google Voice

Post by bhmm »

GrooveIp is a soft PAID app all worth it for 4.00 bucs. It allows you to make and receive calls using Google Voice. All of you know Google voice won't allow you by itself to make free calls. But with This app you will not use your cell minutes. It works on WIFI and 3G. All you need is an internet connection. I have not tested it on Archos since I got rid of my gen 8. But it's working on my galaxy Tab.

Before I went the routes which were mentioned here before: Sipgate, GVcall back, Sipdroid...Tried also Line2 (talktome) and many other...

I got things to work with Sipgate free account, GVCall back and sipdroid.

But now I do not need any of these anymore. Just one app; GrooveIP. Quality voice excellent. No need for a second number. For me I got rid of my cell phone plan and only using my tab with ATT Gsm Sim with a $25 data plan.

GrooveIP is the equivalent of talkatone on IOS devices.

I did try Whistlephone & Sipgate+GVCallback with Linphone. and this worked fine also.

I still have Nettalk which gives you only outgoing free calls. But no incoming calls

Groove Ip and google account would be enough to get covered....it's a paid app worth it.

I would love to give this a try, the only problem is that you only have 15 min. to test it out, before your stuck with it. I there is no way that I could make it to the main area's that I would use it within 15 min. If there is anyone who has used it and can say weather it works well or not on the Archos I will definitely buy it.

---UPDATE---

I emailed creator of the app, and they said that they have a pretty liberal return policy, and that they would work with me, and most likely anyone else that might be interested in the app, to be sure that it works to its fullest capability. So it you are interested then go ahead and email them, and then get the app. I have the app and it is installing.

Well did my first test of the app and all I have to say is that it is freaking amazing. It just simply works. Now with the first test the other end said that there was an echo, but I am sure with some settings tweaks it will work perfectly. This has just become one of my must have apps.

Thanks for testing this on Archos....I ran into the 15 minutes limit and could not return the app right after I discovered that my voice was chopy at the other end even though I could hear the other person perfectly. Tried to return the app but it was too late. I almost started cussing.
But since I was stuck with the app I started troubleshooting. Good enough the creator have explained and built in a few fixes for common issue with sip apps.
Tried all the voice processing and nothing worked. Until I increased the buffer. The choppy voice disappeared totally and I can not notice much delay.

I also had the minor problem you just mentioned about the echo the other person is experiencing. I had to lower my mic gain all way from the -2 default setting to -12 default setting. The echo is all gone... of course my voice is no longer as loud as it was to the other person.
But now I'm happy I bought this app. Way better than CSimple, SIpdroid, fring, .....No need of getting a sip gate phone number, no need to set Callback to get free call.No need of monthly skype fees.

The other thing is did not figure out how to active the receiving of free calls. So I googled and somebody gave the answer...I may e-mail the creator and tells him to explain that for all somewhere. The trick is to go into your account and select "google Chat" for phone call forwarding

For me this is working very good: no more voice plan. Just High Speed data plan from ATT with the SIM inside. I ported my regular number to google for a one time fee of $20 Google will forward my calls to both the tablet, my work number or any other. since the internet is not 100% reliable. I will get a tmobile prepaid card whith another number on it. But will use the tablet most of the time and rarely use that prepaid. But in the offchance my tablet does not ring or work well, I can pick up the phone on that cell. This way I never miss a call but I have to carry that cell phone also.

Thanks for the advice, it has helped a lot. This has been the most exciting app that I have tried in a long time. I can't wait for work to be done so that I can try it out at home too.

Just saw that Amazon has the app for $2. Half the price of the Google Market.

Amazon Market link

I just wish that I had remembered to check there first. :P Oh well I should remember for next time.

Hitchhiker - great post and especially loved the link to the amazon app store as i have not been able to access this before in UK! I notice that the app only mentions this working in USA/Canada - will it work elsewhere?

I think that the limitation to it only working in the US and Canada, id due to the fact that GV only officially works in those countries. There are ways around it, I have seen post about it on the web.

I use this app on both my Archos 101 and my Samsung Vibrant. It works pretty good at times but others I break up and the other side can't hear me. Could by my terrible Comcast connection. But for $2 it's still a steal.

How do you have an AT&T sim with only a data plan? Or do you mean you have a phone plan as well but didn't mention it?

Did any of you have to set any non-default configuration options in GrooveIP to get it to work? I have an A70S, and I can make calls, they connect, and the other side can hear me, but I can't hear them. There are a couple of options that claim to address that (WiFi tablet, alternate audio routing), but changing those didn't seem to do anything.

No mine was pretty much a default install, the only thing that I have had to do was turn down the mic so that there wasn't as much of an echo

I noticed a review on Amazon that this app contains a spyware:

Can anyone comment on this issue?

I tried calling a different number from my original test, from a WiFi network, and noticed that there was sound, but it was too low to make out. Changing the audio volume in the application worked fine. Will have to try out my original test again.

The alleged spyware is Flurry analytics. While I might not object to it in all cases, I do find it very concerning that they're using it without mentioning it in the market. This may be the final straw that pushes me to root my device so I can block it via the hosts file.

Att sells internet plans for ipad or any other tablet for 25.00 no contract. I have a galaxy tab as mentioned above. Gen 9 will allow the same to be done. Viewsonic or huwaie ideo also would work with this setup

I just downloaded this from Amazon for $1.99.
Installed with the default options and it works!

No more ipkall, Sipdroid, or anything else!

I may need to tweak sound settings, but it's good enough for now.

I've used all the 3 above. They all work: wire headset, bluetooth and even none of them: just the tablet holding over the ear and the builtin mike (however its odd like that). Now I'm on galaxy tab. Can not attest for Archos.
