Signature spam

Post by Harfainx »

When I see spam links in people's signature, I just ban them without warning. These are the people that often only have 1 post that seems legit, but their signature is for "iPad accessories" or "Natural wave pools", etc etc...

I think we either need to disable links in signatures, or make it so only people with 50+ posts can have a link in their signature.

These people are slightly harder to detect, because they don't usually spam the forum with multiple posts, and their few posts they have don't get reported.

Links in signatures still clearly violate the spam rule, so I don't even bother giving them a warning.

Code: Select all

- Posting, or linking to, sites whose sole intention is selling members products unrelated to Archos products is Spam, including: Shoes, Clothes, Handbags, Cell phones, etc.
Any comments or other ideas? I know there is a re-work of the site coming soon (as far as I can tell Charbax is working on it, but it's coming along slowly?).

I may look at the history to see if their posts contribute; may check their website; and may send a PM. I may.

We already allow web sites in their Profiles which adds a www button to their posts.

So I know Cowon has been a member for a long time (longer than me), but I noticed that his signature, and his link (the WWW button) go to a site selling something completely unrelated to Archos.

I sent him a message 3 days ago, and he's been posting regularly, but hasn't changed either his signature or his WWW button. His signature is in violation of the rules, as he's linking to a sales site. Because he's been a member for so long (and posts helpful posts), I want to give him a chance to change his link, but right now he's ignoring my request.

I plan on giving him a little more time, and maybe sending another message on Monday (that will be 5 days since the first message), but if he doesn't remove it soon... It will result in me banning him. The rules need to be universal, regardless of how long someone has been a member. I don't want to ban a helpful member, but I can't exactly tell others that they aren't allowed to do it, if we allow him to do it just because he's been a member for a long time.

So if anyone here talks to him, or knows him more than me, please help me out with getting in contact with him so we can resolve this.

Thanks guys.

Here is what I do.

Send him PM's and give him some time to reply and comply. If you don't get an answer go to some of his posts and reply very publicly in those posts that he should check his PM's and reply to you. I do not go into detail why, but I do state that it is urgent that he reply, and I will give a short reason why. Length of membership and overall helpfulness needs to be given every opportunity to correct any infraction.

If you try this route and do not get any reply within a week or two, and the member has come to the site and posted other posts, then let me, or all of us, know right here. More Mods will get involved too and perhaps that will convince him to make some statement, comply or get punished.

My 2 cents about long standing and helpful members.

I removed his signature and URL, we'll see if he doesn't change it back.
