Model: 43IT
Firmware: 2.3.26
Board: A43-V4
Boot: Unknown/4.04.000000

The upgrade killed the stock Music Player. Shuffle play doesnt work (it plays one or two songs then the whole device crashes).

I'll Reset the Multimedia Library....see if that does anything.

First you should delete the connection on the archos by going to settings>wirless &net,,>wifi settings (or you can dellete all connections if wifi is off).

Then, with the wifi on but unconnected to yours or any other network do you still have problems?

if YES then i would download the firmware manually(on your computer) from archos' website and install it via USB and the recovery mode choosing the full reintialization option or the complete device format (during which you should be prompted to plug in you archos and transfer the downloaded firmware file to it). If this does nothing then you should probably take it back and get a replacement. (Or if you're confident with linux and the developer edition firmware you could also try downgrading the firmware, there is some information on the xda forums)

if NO then i would try making the connection again but with different settings (ie disable powersave if it was checked before or vice versa). If this changes nothing then you would need to find out more about your router and network settings before trying anything else - you can find supperficial informationsuch as security, link speed, powersave and network shares by clicking on the connection in wifi settings on the archos. Oh and you should probably switch off/on your router too on the off chance its causing problems now that your device has new firmware and settings.

As soon as i press the forgot button on my network, the problems go away. So it's the if NO :)

I've tried different settings on my archos 70 now, nothing made a difference. After that, i switched off/on my router, wich didn't make a difference either.

Here's the info when i press my network:

Security: WEP
Signal : Excellent
Link speed : 54Mbps
IP-adres: 192.168.***.*** (This doesn't seem to be right! Since on all my other devices that are connected wireless it starts with 77.251.***.**.

Is it possible that that is causing the problems?
192.168.1.10 is a local network IP.

77.251.****** looks like an Internet IP address.

Local addresses are used in the network to relay all devices to the router which then in turn connects to the internet with the internet IP (77.251.****). All devices on your network will then appear to have the same internet IP address as they all connect via the same point. Within the network however each device will be labellled differently. For instance 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 is likely to be the router and your archos and laptop may be 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.16 respectively.

It is possible that your router has saved your archos' settings and is connecting in a conflicting manner with the new FW. Hopefullly It looks less likely that it's something unfixable that would require you to return the device.

two thing to try:

A> You you should try the device on a friend's/neighbour's/mc donalds/what ever connection.

OR

B> You should try to access the router's settings (try typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 into your internet broswer). Often the user name. password is admin/admin but that could vary so you might have to look it up. Then you may be able to delete your archos from the roouter's memory and try making a fresh connection. Or you can try changing the encryption settings from wep to wpa or open. Depending on your router there are going to be other things you can try so you'll have to figure it out on your own a bit.

I would try setting network shares to off on the archos for the connection as a matter of due course. If the device works fine on someone else's connection then you will have to then try option B and get under the hood of your router.

I am a software developer, all upgrades are messy(os software or otherwise), that does not make them stupid. They happen because they are a necessity to keep customers and do business. When they can't happen then as a developer you need to provide a backup, restore migration plan, as Microsoft just learned the hard way with XP to windows 7.

Waving you're hands and saying "you don't understand, it's too complicated, let them start over" just shows that you are more interested in the technology than you are in your customers or product success.

anyway this is WAY off topic and I will let this thread go back to what it was meant for. Moderators feel free to delete all these messages.

Ok, the device was working properly at mc donalds. (Was close to me + I enjoyed a nice meal. Thanks for the tip!)

I just went into my router and this is the router I have: Sitecom WL-114.
It's not saving any connection infomartion, So that wasn't an option. Later today i'll try changing it to a dfiferent security. I can't do that now, because i'm not sure how to do it.

I also can't find an option on my archos to turn of network shares?

I have the white screen issue too and I can confirm it caused by something related with the wifi. It happen when I am using my office wifi but does not hapen at my home wifi. Unfurtenatly, i have no access to my office router admin console.

With my huwawei 3G wifi router, the issue is different. The wifi connection dropped intermitenly during active usages.

With my home wifi, sometime I exerienced some slugish response, keyboard not responding, or home screen freeze. I need to wait between 2-5 second before it become back to normal.

With wifi tutned off, this device runs fast. Better than before the upgrade.

Archos may focus tracking the bug from this finding.

Well that's good news - unfortunately it means that you'll have to learn a bit how to change your router settings to fix your problem though.

Also It would be good of you to eventually report back what you had to do or change to make it work again (eg the last update might have killed WEP support if WPA or open works ok) as the information could be really useful for archos or the other users here.

If you are at a loss with the router settings though you can try to factory reset it as a last resort (look up the manual of your router online on how to do this). Its a good idea to change the encryption from WEP to WPA if your router supports its while you're there too.

The network shares option is specific to each connection on the archos. You can select it when you create the connection or by llong pressing the connection in the wifi settings and chosing 'modiify'

It would be helpful if you could share the details of both your home and office connections here (such as encrpytion etc.) and then also pass on the details to archos directly.

I really liked how mouse works now, but my archos 101 freezes after 10-15 minutes using it. It's an USB mouse, btw.

Not that I'm encouraging people to get an iPad. What a crappy product. But wiping the device isn't a big deal at all.

It'd be even easier if all your apps came from Amazon's App Store. I love that thing. I see every app I bought (i.e., got for free) on all of my Android devices, and can just go through and click a bunch of buttons, and have all my apps back.

Silly users, demanding new features to improve their computing experience. And how dare they demand security fixes and more stability. You are absolutely right. Upgrades are stupid. We should all still be using DOS 1.0 on our computers.

I started out with CPM/86 on an IBM clone machine I built in 1981 for work. Maybe I could go back to 1978 when I was programming in APL on an IBM 5100, the predecessor to the 5150, the original IBM-PC that started it all. That's why I call them the bad old days. Forward and onward! Give me those great OS updates! :D

I'm finding 2.3.26 quite good on both my 43 and 101.

Awesome! Because of your help i got to fix this.

I turned off network shares, then i had to reboot twice before it actually took the setting. After that the device is working properly again. It's not slow anymore, no more white screens.

Some problems are still there to, but i guess that's just the firmware.

Some apps still start up at boot.
Battery still doesn't charge to the full 100%

But, Thanks alot for fixing this for me. I hope this will help other people aswell.

Hmmmm, I have an iPad and an Archos A70 (on 2.1.08) and I wouldn't say the iPad is crappy. Sure it lacks Flash and USB, but crappy? Not so much, in my opinion. It's actually a far better choice for a user that just wants something that just works without tweaking. Of course I like to tinker, so I like the A70, plus I like the size and weight compared to the iPad and the fact that it does Flash....

So (a certain subclass of) users demand something unfeasible and complain (more) when it doesn't work. And wonder why developers hate them. Yeah, you've basically summed it up there.

Andrew, are you new to technology?

Or are you just trolling forums from the middle school library on your lunch hour?

I, for one, am a systems administrator, and upgrades happen because of changing technology environments, security requirements, or (sloppy?, rushed?) coding that can always be optimized. The hardware is usually far more capable than the drivers, OS and applications allow, due to whatever constraints apply.

Certain Archos updates have made my A70 better. Some have been a step back. I'm content to stay on 2.1.08, based on the reports that I have seen here and at XDA.

Since updating my standby battery life has dramatically reduced and it's taking a lot longer to charge. Anybody else seeing this?

It's hard to tell - I think they've changed the battery calibration algorithm in an attepmt to be more accurate and it takes several discharge / charge cycles for it to stablize. At first I couldn't get to 100% and it showed a quicker discharge than before. Now it's more back to the way I expect. I now get 100% and it discharges in a more expected manner. That's just my observation, of course.

Jeez Andrew - how about a little respect for your elders? [-X Did I tell the one about waiting for Bill Gates to release MS-DOS 2.0 with installable device drivers back in 1981 so we could switch over to MS-DOS from CPM/86 on the embedded PC development project I was leading. That was a good update. CPM/86 was not going anywhere, but was ahead of MS-DOS at the time. I'm glad I picked the winner. Some of us here have been around the block a few times. :)
