How to install an apk?
I have a free apk on my HTC Desire which I wanted to install on my son's Archos 70. It appears to have been taken off the market (tried fixed and unfixed on both Archos and Desire). Is there a way of getting the apk across to the Archos please?

You need to downloand and install two apps from the Market into both the phone and the Archos (though you really only need the first app in the Archos).
(1) Type "file manager" in Market search to find "Explorer" by Speed software (a file explorer like Windows explorer of the PC)
(2) Type "appinstaller" in Market search to find "Appinstaller" by Gregory house (there are many apps named "appinstaller" but I like this particular one, except it has poor taste of children books animal pictures!!)
You should also have a microSD card in both the phone and the A70 - any size will do eg. 1GB or larger (they are really cheap nowadays). If you already have a memory card in the phone, just stick with it.
Now on the smartphone:
(1) Run appinstaller:
click "backup" in top menu
find your app and check to select
press "Backup" button at the bottom
it briefly flashes where the app has been saved (on my phone, it is saved into /mnt/sdcard/appsaver)
NOTE: this is how the backup function works, saving all the apps so that you don't need to download them from the Market again. This particular app does not backup user data (eg. phone numbers, contact). There are other apps that do these. A popular app called Titanium backs up everything and resintall them universally, but it requires "root" access aka. "superuser" privilege to the Android OS.
(3) Take the microSD card out of the A70 and put it into the SD card adaptor. Put this into your PC or laptop which has an SD card slot (or use a USB memory card adaptor). Alternatively you can also hook the A70 up with your computer using the USB cable.
(4) Hook up your smartphone with your PC or laptop using the USB data cable. Click "Turn on USB storage" button. Now your computer should detect both cards.
(5) Open up the folders of the microSD card from the smartphone using Windows explorer (presuming you are a Windows person) -> "appsaver" folder -> highlight and copy (or cut) the app (.apk) that you saved using the backup function. Transfer the .apk file to the other microSD card - not within any specific folder (ie. in the "root" of the card), so that you can find it easily.
(6) Put the corresponding card back into the A70, or detach the USB cable of the A70 from the PC / laptop.
(7) Run "Exloprer" app on the A70 (it should start in "/" which is the root of the system) -> mnt -> sdcard, where you should see your .apk.
(8) Click on it to install the app.

Slimthumb, thanks so much! All went very smoothly. The Archos 70 doesn't have an SD card so plugged it in using a USB cable and went from there. An extra bonus was that I backed up all my apps to SD card and then copied the SD card to my computer while it was plugged in so that's a good security measure.

There are a few options to that procedure.
You can use appmonster to do the backup. The paid version can be set to always backup a copy of any newly installed app to sd card. And backup all apps. As a bonus you can use it to install the backed-up apps.
Another option is the ES file manager. It has a backup app function and will install the backed-up files. As a bonus since its a handy file explorer that I use all the time.

It's much easier once you have it backed up to just email the file to yourself rather than hooking everything up through your computer

Dropbox is alot easier.

You don't need any other filemanager or Installer, as this is allready by default on the archos.
So just copy the APK to the archos, and use the Files/Dateien or what ever it is called in you language to install it.

The Archos "File" utility does not allow you to reach the root of the system.@slimthumb_
