Battery Wasting in Deep Sleep
Battery Wasting in Deep Sleep
So I've got an Archos 70 (completely updated) and having huge problems with the wifi. Last night, when I went to bed, my archos was 100% charged. The wifi radio was on, but I put the device in "deep sleep", which I expected would mean almost no battery usage. In the morning, I turned it on, and the battery was more than half gone. I looked in battery usage, and it was 50% wifi, 50% idle. This is ridiculous - anybody have suggestions?
On the wireless connection, I have "disable powersave" checked because I don't want the connection to drop when the screen times out. I also have the power management in overdrive (trying to fix problem of wifi at work dropping when screen times out). Thanks everyone.

Hmm Maybe turn the Wifi Off?ahowe42 wrote:The wifi radio was on, but I put the device in "deep sleep",
If you have disable powersave on for the wifi connection it will not turn the wifi off so you have to turn it off yourselfs before going to deep sleep.
Re: Batter Wasting in Deep Sleep
When I tell it to sleep "deep", mine stays in shallow sleep when the wifi radio is on; I consider that being smart because the radio wouldn't otherwise function. Without the settngs override you mention, I can tap it into deep sleep without radio (but leaving wifi on) and it slumbers with no battery drain.ahowe42 wrote:The wifi radio was on, but I put the device in "deep sleep", which I expected would mean almost no battery usage
If the issue is a sleep timer, tunein lets you put a timeout on most stations. Also there is a sleep timer app that will turn off most radio volumes, but is a bit flakey if you don't have root. I believe these allow it to flip into deep sleep after a time, but I wouldn't know for sure because I usually charge in these overnight radio sessions.

Re: Batter Wasting in Deep Sleep
Thanks guys (and sorry about the typo in the topic title). So it seems "deep sleep" is a misnomer, as it's really nothing more than turning the screen off (simple push of the power button)? It's stupid and annoying that I have to turn off the wifi overnight or leave it plugged in. I would think telling the device "go into deep sleep" would be enough to override the setting. My Milestone does not have this problem.
Does it seem strange to anyone that 25% of the battery would be drained from nothing more than hourly updates of email / news / weather?

Re: Batter Wasting in Deep Sleep
NO! Deep sleep exists and works great and turns wifi off by itself. I may have led you astray because I have used settings to switch the one-power-tap to invoke deep rather than shallow sleep.ahowe42 wrote:So it seems "deep sleep" is a misnomer, as it's really nothing more than turning the screen off (simple push of the power button)? I think if you are draining it is because deep sleep is being postponed. You may be able to deduce this by the led light, but it can be misleading. There are darn good reasons to postpone deep sleep, like if you have a wifi radio running on a sleep timer.
But there are bad reasons to delay deep sleep. It may be some bloodsucking news/weather monitors that android thinks you have requested, but are just stuck on there as a part of gmarket that you cannot uninstall. I have taken steps to disable those and uninstall other things... and my auto memory manager kills other idling apps. Furthermore you have modified wifi settings in a way that maybe defeats the deep sleep process.
My message to you is this is all solvable and deep sleep can work great. But you might not like some solutions.

Re: Batter Wasting in Deep Sleep
I also have problems with the battery draining in deep sleep. I always turn off wifi by hand before i put it to deep sleep through long press the power button and choosing deep sleep.
If put my device to deep sleep for one night and i wake the device in the morning the battery has about the same percentage but if i work with the device for about 10 minutes the battery will drop 10% in 10 minutes of use and will continue to drop very rapid during use.
I i do power off between sessions i have a much better battery performance of about 10-12% per hour watching movie.
Is there a tool wich will tell where the battery charge has gone during the deep sleep ?
I noticed this rapid discharge first after i installed the 2.1.8 firmware but i also installed some other programms so i am not sure if it is only the firmware.

Re: Batter Wasting in Deep Sleep
I put mine in airplane mode and let it the screen go off. I got 219 hrs of up time without charging which includes four hours of actual usage viewing pdfs. Just a thought!
Re: Batter Wasting in Deep Sleep
I am not using any timers, and I don't think I have a problem with any apps. I refuse to disable the radios manually when I go to bed (airplane mode), so my options are:
1) get deep sleep to work like I want
2) leave it plugged in all night
I prefer #1 - if I uncheck the disable powersave on the wifi connection, should the device really go into deep sleep when I select it? I've not seen that, but will try again...
Thanks for your helpful comments viking.

Re: Battery Wasting in Deep Sleep
I think all you have to do is see that none are actually playing - just hit a pause button if one is, then go to deep sleep.ahowe42 wrote:I refuse to disable the radios manually when I go to bed (airplane mode),

Re: Battery Wasting in Deep Sleep
Ok, so yesterday I charged the battery all night. I then unplugged it, put it in airplane mode (long press power -> airplane mode) then put it in deep sleep (long press power -> power off -> deep sleep). After three house, the battery was down 20%. Battery use showed it was 100% idle.
20% battery loss in 3 hours from idling? What the heck is wrong with this device!? Any ideas anyone?

Re: Battery Wasting in Deep Sleep
I have just checked mine to make it sure. I used to put it in airplane mode end then switching it into "deep sleep" mode. In that way battery remained as it was. When I checked right now - it has been being idle in my bag since two days- I saw that battry is at 100%. So, it seems that your device act diferent than mine. One notice : I put itinto airplane mode using "seetings" application. Then an airplane icon appears on top-right corner. Then switch to deep sleep mode using long press to power switch, then select power off/deep sleep options. Small LED under power button turns off.

Re: Battery Wasting in Deep Sleep
Found it - deep sleep wasn't enabled in power management. Maybe it's just me, but this seems silly - if I manually select deep sleep, it should go into deep sleep. Anyway, problem solved. 100% battery -> airplane mode+deep sleep -> 100% battery in the morning.
