Got my 5IT from QVC UK when it was a TSV way back in September 2009 and have used it since on a daily basis and have been very happy with it, "it does what it says on the tin" as they say here. What started as a litle bright spot on the screen has now spread until most of the screen is a washed out grey instead of true black, could this be the start of a full screen failure? The device is still fully functional in every way and it would be a shame to lose it, anyone with any ideas?

it is the fluid inside the LCD pannel itself , plus a polarising sheet on top of that pannel that works in combination to "block Light" comming through the array. when the internal fluid is charged it polarises and in combination with the polariser the particles line up and block the light.

my asumption would be that the fluid is either departing, being pressed out of that location, or not being charged electrically.
if the screen is not cracked or broken anywhere, then suspect that an internal battery might be pushing up on the screen, that would be possible to replace the battery.
if the screen is cracked, seperated, or "drying out" from a crack, then you would need a new screen.
it is likly that a cracked or broken screen with fluid leaking, would start tiny along the ccrack itself then grow.
it is likely that a screen being pressured would start as wrong colors , and slight change in an area.
so a break should intitally be a sharp change, a pressure would be a soft change, then as fluid departed the location is would spread.
if the connection or video processing thing that charges the pannel is dying, it should be more like the whole screen lines blocks, or flickery and effects the whole pannel more often, i have not yet seen where the charge to the pannel dies in a "area".
without seeing it i am just guessing, using the logic i have available at present.
what i would do:
analise the screen with a sharp light, like a flashlight, and see if you can see anything, a small break or crack, it could even be on the backside of the sandwitch.
if the screen looks 100%
then take the device apart and check for battery bulging.
replacing the screens on these things is a lot easier than say resoldering the tiny internal components, and a lot cheaper than sending it in for $$$ them to replace the screen. if the screen is dying, you can get a new screen for many devices, or a unit with other defects, and switch the good screen to your unit. when buying a screen online, do not buy just a "digitiser" as that is only the touch pannel part, you would want the lcd screen with the digitiser.

I know you say that you don't want to lose your Archos due to the problem that you are having with the screen but you could email QVC customer services and see what help they can offer you.I bought an Archos 2 Vision 8gb mp3 player in April last year and by the June the player had completely died on me i emailed QVC and explained the problem and they instructed me to return the item and i got a refund for it.

Many thanks for your input and technical explanation of what the problem could be. QVC state that since the item is 14 months old it is out of warranty and they referred me back to Archos. Archos also stated that the device is out of warranty and that they do not have any leniency on the warranty terms, ÔÇ£12 months or less for repairsÔÇØ, they also informed me that they no longer carry out ÔÇ£out of warrantyÔÇØ repairs and that my only option was to find a local repairer via ÔÇ£ebay or somethingÔÇØ. The final annoying statement from the Archos tech support guy was that he hoped that I would continue being an advocate of Archos products.

STUPID ME...! I misread the date you purchased your Archos i for some STUPID reason thought it was September 2010 not 2009 i wouldn't have recommened contacting QVC as i know myself the warranty would have run out by that time and they wouldn't be able to help.....Sorry for my stupidness holmesy i guess i " should have gone to spec savers"
