External storage and or HDD...what you need to buy

Excellent thread with lots of information you need to get started. Lots of work by bhmm.

Wanted to link the post here, since there are probably others that want this information.

To get you started here are links to products that you can't live without, if you want to use external storage on battery power (Archos) only:

cable:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... nt_id=5042

I have the above, works perfectly. There are other cables, maybe cheaper, but they (digikey) ship fast and this one works for sure. Link from bhmm (there are other cables linked in the first post)

USB card reader:

http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Flash-M ... 433&sr=8-2

This thing is awesome, and will alow you to use external memory cards. I use this one, since all my thumbdrives will not work on the low powered usb port of the 70. Link from butterflygirl

Of course you can also buy the above cable, plug in a POWERED usb hub. This will supply the neccessary power to your thumbdrives/external hard drives (that only work using USB port power) that will not work on the Archos 70 USB port alone.

You may or may not have to restart the Archos after plugging in the USB cable to get the external devices recognized.

Hope you find this information helpful. I sure did.

Hello!

When you say that the cable works perfectly, what do you mean? Is it working with USB sticks, external HDDs?

I am thinking to buy one.

I bought this adapter on Friday (not from Amazon but from a local supplier, for 6 Euros !) : http://www.amazon.com/USB-Adapter-Type- ... 173&sr=1-4

I connected the in-box Archos USB cable to my Archos 70, then plugged the above adapter and a USB Stick at the end .... and nothing!....

I hope with the cable you have you can just plug-in a USB stick directly...
Is it so?

Thank you
Mike

The adapter you bought will not work with the stock cable because the stock cable that comes with the A70 is a standard "non-host" USB cable and it lets you connect your A70 to your computer to transfer files between the computer and the A70. Basically, it makes your computer (the "host") see the A70 as if it were a big USB flash drive.

The "HOST" cable has an extra grounded pin in it that when plugged in tells the A70 to act as the "host" (like a computer) so you can plug other devices into it such as flash drives, USB hard drives and mice. The A70's USB port does not supply enough power to run most unpowered devices (like thumb drives) without using a powered USB hub. It's kind of a hit or miss thing.......some work perfect and some don't. Read the thread linked in the post above as it has all the info you can possibly need.

For a list of cables and adapters which do work for USB Host see the topic: USB Host Cables/Adapters that work - a list.
