Froyo Update setCPU reads 800Mhz max

Post by Tdouble »

Checked with setCPU and device is working with 800Mhz max instead of 1000Mhz. is it safe to bump this up to 1000Mhz??

That would definitely explain reduced performance. I wonder why that happened and how long it will take to undo.

Well, Archos also told us 800Mhz Hardware is too slow for Froyo, remember the 7th Generation...

I would love to get custom kernels and be able to "over clock" it

I can run my DX as high as 1.45 but normally keep it at 1.3Ghz

i would suspect it will be something to do with them adding some code to the rom that forces it to be a certain speed steming out of the fact that the smaller <7" devices run at 800mhz and amazingly they all are expected to install the same ROM file.

The MAX is set to 800Mhz, what's the idle speed?

from what i remember im sure MIN was 300Mhz. Can someone test with 2.1 to see if the results are the same.

min is 300. I saw this last night as well while playing with system panel. my battery was at ~20% so i thought it might be some sort of power saving... wanted to wait till recharged to verify. I did temp root at that point and install setcpu and bump speed up to 1000mhz and saw a noticeable speed increase in use. more along the lines i would expect from the device with Froyo... now just to get perm root so we can set this at boot......

I don't suppose we accidentally got the firmware for the A43? (Or was that the A32)

Archos has been doing one firmware for all Gen8 devices. There are just some bugs that need to be worked out.

Im guessing the 7th generation Archos are not running the same ARM Cortex A8 CPU, but something else - Clockspeeds are not directly comparable between different generations or types of CPU's

Thanks for mentioning about this! I was wondering why the system performance didn't increase with froyo update...
Turns out it did increase, just the cpu being limited hurting it. :/

Getting 1200 on phone speed tester after changing the cpu speed back, rather than the 1000 from before the update.

you're getting 1200 on quadrant? and you were getting 1000 before fixing the cpu speed? what device are you using?

Not quadrant. I was using some basic "phone speed tester" app from the appmarket. I think i was getting 1000 on it before.

I'll go install quadrant to test it out. Never heard of it before.

edit: 888 in quadrant atm.

ok thanks, was kindda startled by that mostly because Charbax was getting 1200+ in his 2.2 beta testing where as I have yet to see anyone break 1000 even with setcpu running.

I needs that 200 mhz! flash video is almost smooth, that would probably make the difference.

Alright, I tested it out with a temporary root. By setting the Max to 1000 MHz, I got far better Linpack scores, so it is true and the CPUs are underclocked. This may have a lot to do with why Flash video is so useless at this point. Also, a permanent root does not seem to work at this point and never completes.

Linpack scores:

Default: Average of 10.662 MFlops

Rooted and manually set to 1GHz MAX: Average of 12.949 MFlops

That's a good ~22% performance increase from this benchmark (real world performance could be less or greater), which seems to be desperately needed.

I rooted mine with Z4 (temp) and bumped up the CPU from 800 to 1000 and in Quadrant I went from 750 at 800mhz to 951 at 1ghz. Too bad I cant keep root yet.

i think once we get room and can do things like Titanium Backup to freeze and uninstall apps and keep the CPU at 1ghz (or more - AKA custom kernels) it will be a much better device and i will then be happy with it.....because right now i am not
