WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Market
WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Market
I made the horrific mistake of upgrading, only to realize afterwards that this upgrade does a complete OS wipe out and rebuild and blows away all the apps I downloaded - and bought - from the Market after installing gApps4Archos. The books I bought on Kindle and Nook? Can't read 'em. No Kindle app anymore. No Nook app. No Launcher Pro; no nothing. This thing is now completely useless to me. I mainly wanted it for reading books. I'm not using that stupid reader that comes with it. I bought books on Amazon; I want to read them on the Kindle app.
Someone please tell me a gApps4Archos2-2 will be coming in the next day or two, not week or two. This sucks, BIG TIME.

do you have an android phone or do you know anyone that does? you can do whats called side loading BUT i think if its paid apps there might be a problem until we get market access back. non paid apps load up easy.
i can email etc you some if you need the apks

Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
I bought my Archos specifically because of gapps4archos app that lets me have all the Google apps and market. If others are like me and the original poster, it's way more important to keep that than to get the 2.2 bonuses.
I suspect someone will update the gapps4archos with the 2.2 ones soon.

Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
Is it possible to downgrade the os back to 2.1 or is it set that only upgrades can now be done?

Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
There's already a solution to get the Market and Google apps loaded on Froyo via ADB. Sure, it takes a bit of knowledge and skill, but the solution is there until an new installer is created.

http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=41982 (step-by-step)
If you can't figure ADB out, another solution involving using Terminal Emulator is at http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=42000.
However, as Archos never officially supported the Market in the first place, you're not losing any promised functionality even if you can't figure out how to install it.

This should be stickied imo,
Until the gapps for 2.2 is easily accessible

Here is the latest Kindle. I just copy my favorite apps from my android phone to my Dropbox and then install them to my Archos.

Dumb question: How do I copy apps to Dropbox on my phone? I have Dropbox installed, but where do I find the files for the apps to drop into it?

just download the new Vending.apk from my quote below, and replace the one in market.rar from the top quote. follow the rest of those instructions and you'll be all set.
I recommend downloading gmail and any other google apps you want through the updated market after installing, as those included in market.rar are all old (2.1)
edit: all i believe you really need to do is create the folders, copy the newer Vending.apk to it, and reboot. I don't know what else in market.rar is necessary but those instructions worked for me so i included them.
cajl wrote:1. - install Appslib from archos site

3. - uncompress the market.rar on your pc (in c:\market) for example url from the market.rar http://dl.free.fr/hR3wuEujb
4. - plug Gen8 device in USB (without USB development option)
5. - copy the directory market on the Gen8 device on the root directory
6. - unplug the device
7. - launch Terminal Emulator
8. - type "cd data/test"
9. - "mkdir -p froyo/system/app"
10. - "cd froyo/system/app"
11. - "cp /sdcard/market/*.apk ."
12. - "ls -l" to check that all the apk are here
13. - reboot and enjoy
thanks GILSKENdigibucc wrote:the market force closes because it is actually the eclair version hacked for froyo, replacing the vending.apk with a froyo version fixes the crashes.
i copied the vending.apk out of my 2.2 Evo and followed the directions again, this time only copying that specific apk after deleting the existing one. now browsing downloading installing from the market no crashes, so a new vending.apk is your solution.
well whaddaya know , it seems some nice fella uploaded the proper vending.apk here:

definitely wasn't me, just replace the one from your existing "market" folder. it should be 900+kb(new) vs 600+kb(old)teach you to be cautious, but don't get so worked up! it just gives you chance to figure out solutions on your own. all of my purchases through market were still there, i just reinstalled no problem. you can install flash through market as well.yourgsle wrote:Desperately waiting for the APK. I was dumb enough just to run the update... now all my favorite APPs are gone and I can't reinstall them ... and still no flash...
I advise everyone to WAIT, at least until the APK for froyo is out ... otherwise you'll be f***ed just like me. I am a newbie, but this lesson will teach me ...
Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
Problem solved for me. I used App Manager on my HTC Incredible phone and backed up all the apps I had to sd card. Then put it in the A70 and installed the apps! Good news!
Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
What about those like myself who don't have a android phone? I haven't upgraded to 2.2 yet but would like a way to back up my stuff.

Perhaps run App Manager on the A70, which backs up all your apps to the SD card. Then upgrade and install from the card. Assuming the App Manager works on 2.1...vohkuhl wrote:What about those like myself who don't have a android phone? I haven't upgraded to 2.2 yet but would like a way to back up my stuff.

Sorry, I meant App Monster.
Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
haha too late, I couldn't wait and updated, I don't mind waiting around since I didn't have many apps to begin with. Atleast it will give me time to research the apps I'm looking for for my current/future needs.EZRyder wrote:EZRyder wrote:Perhaps run App Manager on the A70, which backs up all your apps to the SD card. Re: WARNING: Don't upgrade to 2.2 if you have installed Mark
No need to reply I got it. I installed the market folder to my SD card and not the internal storage and that was causing the error
