Bug: onscreen keyboard

Post by cowon »

This is a bug left over from the 605. When you try and type "^" (the carat symbol) on the on screen keyboard, the first press doesn't type anything, just removes the "Alt" keypress from previously. If you immediately try and type it again, it works. Very annoying when typing passwords containing one or more carats.

Can anyone else confirm this problem?

I've had it on two 605s and three Archos 5s.

I have an A5 IMT and can confirm this bug. In order to get a carat character I have to:

ALT - ^ - ALT - ^

It's strange though - when you hit ALT the blue characters on the keys become larger so you know what they are and that they will be the character output if you hit that key. However when you follow the keypress sequence, the blue symbols on the keys do not grow larger the second time you hit ALT.

ALT - ^ - ALT

None of the characters on the keyboard are larger.

Anyhow, confirmed.

exactly as Kirk says on mine as well, also on mine the character right next to it (to the left) does the same thing, except it never produced the character even after multiple attempts, same sequence of events though

This bug has existed for several years now - why on earth hasn't it been fixed?

When will the next firmware come out?

Nobody here knows if another firmware release will happen or not.

But this bug has existed through dozens of firmware revisions.

I've been complaining about this since Gen 5 - it can't be that hard to fix!

I agree it should be fixed. But at the same time, I can't remember the last time I had need of the carat symbol. Perhaps I'm an oddity.

I think if you press the ^ button and then a vowel, such as o, it will type a ├┤ or other corresponding ^ed letter, which makes sense as to why it takes two presses.

Why isn't that documented at all? No other keyboard works like that. And I have carats in many usernames I need to type several times a day.

For some PC keyboard layouts that's standard behavior, e.g. the german layout uses those so called "dead keys".

So in my book it's most likely not a bug but it's a feature.
